Sepsis affects the entire body by triggering an extreme immune response to an infection, causing widespread inflammation that damages the body's own tissues and organs, leading to potential failure in the lungs, kidneys, heart, liver, and brain, and can progress to life-threatening septic shock. It starts from an infection anywhere (like respiratory, urinary, skin) but quickly becomes systemic, disrupting blood flow and oxygen to vital areas, hence its nickname as a "whole-body" response.
This includes bacterial, viral or fungal infections. Those that more commonly cause sepsis include infections of: Lungs, such as pneumonia. Kidney, bladder and other parts of the urinary system.
The organs more frequently affected are kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, central nervous system, and hematologic system. This multiple organ failure is the hallmark of sepsis and determines patients' course from infection to recovery or death.
Patients with sepsis usually develop a rash that looks like a cluster of small spots of blood. These may get bigger and start to look like fresh bruises.
Sepsis occurs unpredictably and can progress rapidly. In the worst cases, blood pressure drops, the heart weakens, and the patient spirals toward septic shock . Once this happens, multiple organs—lungs, kidneys, liver—can quickly fail, and the patient can die.
