Hard Metals – Since rats can't chew through hard metals like steel, it's one of the reasons it's recommended that holes are filled with wire mesh and steel wool and then filled with caulking. Metal tiling is also a great way to prevent them from getting into your home from the floor.
Pests like rats and mice hate chewing through steel wool, since the sharp edges hurt them the more they try to chew. Steel wool is also non-toxic, unlike many pest control solutions, so you can place it around your house without worrying about one of your pets or children getting into it.
Rodents are very skilled at finding food. They can easily gnaw through plastic and cardboard packaging to get at food.
Rats chew. “They can chew through lead, cinderblock, brick, mortar, aluminum, wood, glass, vinyl and improperly cured concrete,” according to Diana Key who, at the time of reporting, worked as an environmental health supervisor at the Salt Lake County Health Department.
Rat Tape. Rodents can't chew through rat-proofing tape due to the mesh it contains. The tape can be cut to the required size using tin snips. Suitable for all rodents such as rats, mice and squirrels.
Seal any holes you find to stop rodents from entering. Fill small holes with steel wool. Put caulk around the steel wool to keep it in place or use spray foam. Use lath screen or lath metal, cement, hardware cloth, or metal sheeting to fix larger holes.
Some people combine this with expanding foam, to improve the cosmetic appearance and prevent drafts. However, expandable foam alone will not stop rats - they will chew through it.

Rats are afraid of human activity, mostly because humans are so much larger than they are. Rats also fear predators such as hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey. Other animals that rats are afraid of include your cat as well as rat terriers and other dogs that hunt rodents.
Another food rats can't resist is peanut butter. Not only are rats drawn to the scent of peanut butter, but its texture and consistency make it a very effective bait. It takes some time for rats to eat peanut butter from a trap; they can't just snatch the bait and run away.
Structural Damage
Rats can gnaw through the structural wood framing of your house, including floor joists, headers, studs, and roof trusses. They'll chew through sheetrock, soft concrete, and even your drywall. Basically, rats can and will chomp through your house to get where they want.
This makes peppermint oil, chili powder, citronella, and eucalyptus the most common natural rodent repellents. Chemical smells, such as ammonia, bleach, and mothballs also work as mice deterrents.
Rodents often gnaw into walls at corners or where joints in construction materials provide an edge. Prevent rodents from climbing walls, particularly in corners, by attaching 12- to 18-inch-wide aluminum sheet metal bands at least 36 inches above the ground or at floor level (Figure 9).
The smell of peppermint, chili pepper, eucalyptus, citronella, and sagebrush are all effective at keeping rats away if applied in the right concentration. They are also deterred by chemical smells like ammonia and bleach.
It turns out that baking soda catalyzes some form of reaction inside the rat's stomach. Baking soda combines with the stomach acids to produce carbon dioxide gas which rats are unable to tolerate. In turn, it builds up within their system and eventually causes internal blockage and rupture.
Epsom salt
Sprinkle Epsom salts onto your trash can lid or around the areas that pests like to burrow into or dig around. Epsom salts will deter most any pests, including raccoons, mice, and squirrels among others.”
Rats, like mice, can squeeze through impossibly small gaps (anything down to the size of a 10p coin) and should never be underestimated as to their versatility and persistence when trying to enter a building.
Rats and mice can crawl through very small spaces (under doors, into crevices, etc.) and when they can't fit, then they simply gnaw and chew their way through. destructive to homes, and can carry germs that make people sick. They often make their nests in and around people's homes and office buildings.
Rats are very playful and providing toys for enrichment is highly recommended. Some good options include: cardboard boxes, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, bells, and paper towels left in sheets so that they can have the fun of chewing them up!
Mothballs repelling mice and rats is a common misconception. Mothballs contain a small amount of naphthalene and can be a deterrent in large quantities, however, they aren't powerful enough to get rid of mice and rodents.
