Often perceived as hazardous, eucalyptus essential oil kills scale insects such as mites, aphids, earwigs, and whiteflies. When keeping these pests away, turn to this essential oil insect repellent.
Those most closely associated with repellency are citronella oil, eucalyptus oil, and catnip oil, but others include clove oil, patchouli, peppermint, and geranium.
All-natural air freshener spray: For an effective natural room freshener that not only smells great but also kills bacteria and viruses that make us sick, mix 15 drops of eucalyptus oil with half a teaspoon of vodka and 2 cups of water in a large spray bottle, and regularly mist for an odor and germ-free home.
Clove, peppermint, thyme, rosemary, and citronella oil are just a few essential oils that can help keep bugs away.
EUCALYPTUS. Everyone knows Eucalyptus Oil is great for relieving cold and flu symptoms, but it is also a very effective insect repellent. Research shows that this pungent oil is more effective against sand flies than any other natural product.
Peppermint is the most effective oil to repel spiders. Besides peppermint and spearmint, essential oils for spiders include citrus elements like orange, lemon and lime. Citronella, cedar wood, tea tree oil and lavender also can be effective. However, consider whether you want to get rid of spiders at all.
Vinegar spray
One of the easiest homemade bug sprays, simply mix one cup of white vinegar with three cups of water. You can also add half a teaspoon of dishwashing soap to help the solution adhere. Shake thoroughly and apply to the affected areas.
Both apple cider vinegar and white vinegar are a good base for an insect repellent, as they deter flies and, combined with specific essential oils, will deter mosquitoes and ticks as well.
Windex – Windex is one of the most common and most effective DIY household products for pest control. Windex is toxic to most pests, especially spiders. Spraying window cleaner directly onto small insects like ants or mosquitoes will kill them within a few moments.
Essential oils can also keep insects away. Citronella, lemongrass, sweet orange, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, and cinnamon are just a few of the oils known to repel summer bugs. There are several recipes available online for DIY bug repellants, yard sprays, candles, and diffuser blends.
You can also make traps for fruit flies and gnats using apple cider vinegar mixed with a few drops of dish soap. The insects will be drawn to the smell of the vinegar, but once they touch it, the soap will make it impossible for them to escape.
Use Cedar
Like lavender, cedar has been used as a natural repellent for pests and insects for a long time. Simply grab yourself some cedar chips or cedar blocks and place them in your closet.
You can deter some common pests, especially ants, by spraying vinegar on and around your windows. Ants can fit through the smallest gaps in window screens or even between the screen and frame. By spraying vinegar outside your window and its frame, you can deter ants before they become a problem.
Pyrethrin. Extracted from the chrysanthemum flower, this insecticide affects an insect's nervous system. Spray pyrethrin on mosquitoes, moths, flies, fleas or any hard bodies insect to kill them quickly.
Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids: Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are the most common compounds used to control bed bugs and other indoor pests.
Lavender has a pleasant scent that comes from the essential oils in the leaves of the plant, but the bugs hate it. Hang some dried lavender in your closet and you won't have to worry about moths eating your clothes.
Eucalyptus. Another natural spider repellent is Eucalyptus. Burn some Eucalyptus oil or put some Eucalyptus leaves in your cupboards and nooks to keep spiders away.
While peppermint is generally a bug repellent, there are some types of insects that are actually attracted to the smell of mint and/or mint plants. The really neat thing is that the insects mint attracts are actually beneficial!
Instructions: Fill your spray bottle with a 1:1 ratio of water and vinegar. Add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to your bottle and shake well. Tip: You can add a few more drops of oil if the scent isn't minty enough for you.
