The time limit to delete a message for everyone (unsend) varies by app, but it's generally a few days, with WhatsApp offering about 2 days (68 hours), while Signal offers a shorter window, often around 24 hours for recent messages. The ability to delete for everyone requires both sender and recipient to use the latest app version, and recipients may see the message before it's deleted, as shown by "This message was deleted" text.
You won't be notified if deleting for everyone wasn't successful. You have two days after you've sent a message to request to Delete for Everyone. Only group admins can delete messages sent by other group members. Group admins have two days after someone else sends a message to request to Delete for Everyone.
Once you use the 'Delete for Everyone' feature on WhatsApp, the message is removed from both your chat and the recipient's chat. However, recipients might still get a notification if they saw the message before you deleted it.
When deleting a message you received, you only have the option to Delete for you. If you select Delete for you, other people in the chat will still see the messages in their chat screen. If you select Delete for everyone, other people in the chat will no longer be able to see the deleted message.
Method 1: Use Apple's official undo send feature
This is the primary and most reliable method for deleting messages from both sides. Apple introduced this feature in iOS 16, and when it works, it completely removes the message from both devices.
The WhatsApp 24-hour rule is a policy for businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform, stating that after a customer sends a message, the business has 24 hours to reply freely (text, images, etc.). After this window closes, businesses must use pre-approved, non-promotional "template messages" to re-engage the customer, preventing spam and ensuring user privacy. Each new customer message resets the 24-hour timer, starting a new free-form conversation window.
Still, the thing is that there is a limited time: you only have two days to use the "Delete for Everyone" feature after sending a message. Once that time is up, the option to delete for everyone disappears, and you can only remove the message for yourself.
In reality, deleting a file doesn't immediately remove it from your hard drive. Instead, the system just marks that space as available for new data. Until something else takes its place, that file can still be recovered. For anyone unfamiliar with how digital storage works, this concept can be a bit tricky.
WhatsApp messages can be traced after they've been deleted because WhatsApp stores their source codes and destination codes for a period of time. On your device itself, deleted messages may be recovered using certain tools if new data has not overwritten it, or if they are saved in a backup.
Google Messages is now rolling out "Delete for everyone," a feature that lets you delete a sent message from all recipients' devices.
Once you've confirmed you have a Google Account backup, you can start the restoring process. If you don't have a Google Account backup, you can still restore chats on a new device by transferring chats from your old device.
Manually delete text messages from Android phone:
After you block someone, your messaging threads with them will remain in your Direct inbox, but you won't be able to message them. If you're in a group chat with someone you've blocked, you'll get a dialog asking whether you want to stay in the group or leave.
Let the Airplane mode turn on and go to the WhatsApp application. Step 5: Select the messages and tap on the delete option. Select the Delete for Everyone option and wait for the deletion process to end in case of a large number of messages.
However, you need to delete the message within two minutes of sending it, and your recipients will still get a notification showing that you unsent a previous text. To do so, open the “Messages” app and click on the conversation. Then, tap and hold the message and tap “Undo Send” when the prompt arises.
It's not rude to turn on disappearing messages. Still, it's best to discuss your decision with other group admins, friends, or family who'll be affected when enabling this in-chat setting. Otherwise, the WhatsApp user you're chatting with may think you're trying to manipulate the conversation.
Open the chat and long-press the specific message you want to remove. This works for text, photos, videos, voice notes, and files. Once the message is highlighted, follow the steps for your device: iPhone (iOS): Tap the Trash Icon 🗑️ trash icon → Select Delete for Everyone.
Contact Your Carrier: Some cellular carriers keep text message records and may be able to retrieve them for you. This is not a guarantee, but it's worth asking. Keep in mind they might need a valid reason for you requesting such information.
