It's hard to get rid of lice eggs (nits) because they are cemented incredibly tightly to hair strands with a super-strong, glue-like substance, resisting simple washing and even some treatments, requiring painstaking manual removal with a fine-toothed comb or fingernails to break the life cycle and prevent re-infestation. Plus, many chemical treatments don't kill all the eggs, and resistance to over-the-counter products is increasing, making manual removal and repeat treatments essential.
Eggs from head lice, also called nits, are incredibly difficult to remove. Female lice lay eggs directly onto strands of hair, and they cement them in place with a glue-like substance, making them hard to get rid of.
It's possible that you are dealing with head lice that are resistant to the active ingredient in your treatment product. Consult with your pediatrician or contact a pediatric dermatologist for a prescription head lice treatment.
Treatment
If you don't kill the nits, they will hatch and your child will have lice again – this time without any contact with another infested child!

Conditioner doesn't break the glue that holds nits to hair, but it changes the playing field in your favor. It coats the hair shaft so a fine‑tooth comb can stay in steady contact from scalp to tip without snagging. That slickness also slows live lice, making them easier to trap and remove.
Adult lice can only live a day or so without blood for feeding and nymphs can only live for a few hours without feeding. Nits will generally die within a week away from the host and cannot hatch at temperature lower than that close to the human scalp.
When they are alive, nits are firmly attached to the hair follicle close to the scalp. When treating head lice, it may be difficult to tell whether the nit is still alive or if it has hatched. The simplest way to tell is by looking at the color — live and dead nits are brown while hatched nits are clear.
Yes, head lice can briefly live and crawl onto pillows, but they can't survive long (usually 1-2 days) without a human host for blood meals, and nits won't hatch without scalp warmth, making pillows a low risk for infestation, but washing bedding in hot water is recommended to kill any stragglers.
It's also possible to have nits leftover from a prior outbreak. Other scenarios for nits but no lice include: The louse might have laid its eggs then traveled to another head. It might have found your head incompatible and not laid as many eggs.
Identify Your Symptoms
Most people don't experience itching until they've had lice for 4-6 weeks. If you just started itching, your infestation likely began at least four weeks ago. People who have had lice before may develop itching more quickly during subsequent infestations.
