While Vanish Mode is essentially the same, there are a few key differences between the two privacy features. Using the Secret Conversation mode, you can create end-to-end encrypted chats. Messenger doesn't save the chats from Secret Conversations on their servers; instead, they're saved on the users' devices.

Does Vanish Mode Delete Messages for Everyone? Yes, Instagram Vanish mode deletes messages for both participants in a chat. If you activated the feature or only accepted it, your messages in a Vanish Mode conversation will be deleted. Likewise, any message you send or receive will be removed.
Be aware of disappearing messages.
To see if disappearing messages are enabled for a conversation: Tap the chat to open it. Tap the name of the person at the top of the chat. Scroll down and look for "Disappearing Messages." If it says "Off" beneath it, messages are not set to disappear automatically.
Vanish Mode only works for one-on-one chats. You won't be able to activate it in a chat with more than two people. If you take a screenshot or record the screen when using Vanish Mode, both parties will get a notification.
When you activate Vanish mode, you will see an empty screen devoid of your old messages. But don't worry. Messages sent outside of Vanish mode will remain untouched. As soon as you turn off the mode, you can see your regular messages.
You can recover deleted messages from Facebook Messenger by downloading them or checking old email notifications. You can also recover them by looking in the cache of the Messenger app, if you use Android. You can also check your archived messages or ask the person you were messaging with for a copy.
The chats with the lock icon are secret conversations. If you remember the name with whom you have started secret conversations, search the name and tap the one with the lock icon. Note : If the sender has set a timer for the secret conversations, they will automatically disappear after a period.

Once you've swipe up, your screen goes black, and you'll be notified that you've entered Vanish Mode. From there, all messages you send will disappear until you either exit the DMs or quit Vanish Mode.

By restricting someone, you're putting them on a restricted list, which limits their ability to contact you. Their messages will go straight to your "Message Requests" folder, and you won't receive notifications for them.
