If your loved one dies unexpectedly, call 000. If you were expecting them to die, call their doctor. They will sign a certificate that confirms the death. If they died in aged care, at a hospital or in a hospice, you don't need to do anything.

The police will arrange for the body to be moved by a funeral director acting for the coroner if the death is unexpected. If a doctor has confirmed an expected death you may call a funeral director of your own choice when you are ready to do so.
You may be eligible to receive Bereavement Payment if you received an eligible payment from Centrelink or the Department of Veteran's Affairs at the time of the person's death. Bereavement Payment is usually paid as a lump sum.

On 1 December 2022, a one-off $4,000 income credit was added to the Work Bonus income bank of those at least pension age and in receipt of an Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment or certain Veterans entitlement. Funeral Bond Allowable limit
As at 1 July 2022 the allowable limit is $14,000. The Department of Social Services reviews this limit on 1 July each year. If you jointly own a funeral bond, we count it as a single bond that you own.

As the blood pools, patches appear on the skin within 30 minutes of death. About two to four hours postmortem, these patches join up, creating large dark purplish areas towards the bottom of the body and lightening the skin elsewhere. This may be less apparent on darker skin. This process is called livor mortis.
