As evidenced by the chart above D cups are not equivalent across the board and in fact are completely dependent on band size. So, the D cups on a 36D are bigger than the D cups on a 34D which are both bigger than the D cups on a 32D.
Let's say you wear a 34D and the cup and band feel too small. You'll want to try a 36D. This jump in band and cup size is one cup size and band size larger.

34 D is an average cup size but relatively bigger than B and C cups of equal band size. Cup size is determined just by the differences in the underbust and over the bust measurements.
