Nirmatrelvir in combination with ritanovir (sold as Paxlovid) and molnupiravir (sold as Lagevrio) are now available on the PBS in Australia for the treatment of COVID-19. They were provisionally approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in January 2022.
Remdesivir is the only antiviral drug that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of COVID-19.
How much do oral antivirals cost? Oral antivirals, Lagevrio® and Paxlovid® are available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in Australia and are subsidised for people with a Medicare cardlaunch.
People with COVID-19 who don't need oxygen and are not in hospital may be eligible for either Lagevrio or Paxlovid if they meet certain criteria. Lagevrio and Paxlovid are oral COVID-19 antiviral medicines (taken by mouth) that help to stop the COVID-19 infection from becoming severe and making you very sick.
The intravenous antiviral Veklury® (remdesivir) can also be considered for use in adults and paediatric patients for the treatment of COVID-19.

The EUA authorizes the emergency use of Paxlovid for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients (12 years of age and older weighing at least 40 kg) who are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death.
Those aged 70 or older, regardless of risk factors and with or without symptoms. People aged 60–69, with one additional risk factor for developing severe disease.
Paxlovid, an oral antiviral medication, will start to work against COVID as soon as you take it, but you may not start to feel better right away. It is important you start treatment as soon as possible, within 5 days of symptom onset and testing positive for COVID.
Last year, researchers found that high-risk people who took Paxlovid within five days of testing positive for COVID-19 were 26% less likely to have Long COVID symptoms after 90 days, compared to people who weren't treated.
Pfizer's clinical trial found Paxlovid reduced a person's risk of hospitalization by 89% when given within three days of symptom onset. Merck's clinical trial showed molnupiravir cut the rate of hospitalization or death by 30% when the drug was given within five days of symptoms onset.
Some common side effects include headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, high blood pressure, sore muscles, and changes in taste.
In part because of their differing efficacy, Lagevrio had a tougher road to authorization than Paxlovid did. While Merck's drug was shown to reduce risk of hospitalization and death by only 30% in recently infected, at-risk patients in clinical testing, Pfizer's pills cut the risk by 89%.
Paxlovid starts to work soon after you take it. It works best when taken as soon as possible after getting a positive COVID-19 test and within 5 days of your symptoms starting. Everyone has a different experience of COVID-19, especially if you have risk factors for getting severely ill.
Use medications containing guaifenesin, such as Robitussin, Mucinex, and Vicks 44E. keeping you from getting rest. Coughing is useful because it brings up mucus from the lungs and helps prevent bacterial infections. People with asthma and other lung diseases need to cough.
This lowers the amount of virus in your body with the goal of you having less severe symptoms and recovering more quickly. Antiviral therapy is not a cure for COVID-19. You are still contagious and can spread the virus to others.
The 7-day and 30-day COVID-19 rebound rates after Paxlovid treatment were 3.53% and 5.40% for COVID-19 infection, 2.31% and 5.87% for COVID-19 symptoms, and 0.44% and 0.77% for hospitalizations.
Those with severe COVID-19 may remain infectious beyond 10 days and may need to extend isolation for up to 20 days. People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should isolate through at least day 20.

It's designed to keep people who have mild to moderate symptoms of COVID from getting so sick that they need to be hospitalized. Examples of high-risk patient characteristics include older adults (age 50 yr+), asthma, smoking (current or former), overweight, diabetes, pregnant, immune compromised, mental health disorders, substance use disorders, and cardiovascular disease. Paxlovid is taken twice daily for 5 days.
People who get what's being called “Paxlovid mouth” often notice a bitter or metallic taste in their mouth shortly after taking their first set of pills. Other more colorful descriptions have been reported in the media.
Take Paxlovid for 5 days. Even if you start to feel better, it's important you complete the course.
