John Smith III or John Smith, III? A. Traditionally, it would be John Smith, Jr., and John Smith III. But beginning with the fourteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (1993), the recommendation is to use no commas in either case (see paragraph 6.43 of the seventeenth edition):
If a suffix such as Jr., Sr., Third, III, etc. is part of your name, enter it after your last name in that field of the return.
Rule – Use commas to surround degrees or titles used with names. Commas are no longer required around Jr. and Sr. Commas never set off II, III, and so forth.
Junior, Senior, the Third (III), etc. are known as suffixes.
Someone can use both the “Sr.” or “Jr.” suffix and/or a Roman numeral suffix if they so wish. If our Barnabas Ludwig Johnson II below and his son, Barnabas Ludwig Johnson III, are both still alive, then the former can be called “II” and/or “Sr.”, while the latter can be called “III” and/or “Jr.”
When a man is named after his father who is a “Jr.,” he is called “the third,” once written with either the numeric 3rd or the Roman numeral III, but now the latter is used almost exclusively. A man named after his grandfather, uncle, or cousin uses the suffix II, “the second.”
For the suffixes III, IV, V and so on and so forth, if a boy is named after his father, and his father is a Jr. or II, then the boy becomes the third (III) and, as the name is passed down, later generations become the fourth (IV), the fifth (V)—you get the idea.
The suffixes “Sr”, “Jr”, “II”, “III”, etc are only used when you have people with EXACTLY the same name. The purpose is to distinguish one relative from another. If you have a different middle name, then that is how you are distinguished. Your father is John Q Smith, you are John C Smith.
In a full name listing, the suffix follows the last name because the person is primarily known by is given name and surname, the suffix being a secondary piece of information. When listing last name first, the given name follows the surname because that is how we sort: all the Does, then the Johns, and finally the Jr.
"Jr.," “III,” or other suffixes are not included with in-text citations, but they are included in the reference list entries. In a reference, include the suffix, set off with commas, as shown here: Jones, H. W., Jr., & Jones, H. W., Sr. (1941).
COMMA RULE #3 – THE COMMA IN A COMPOUND SENTENCE: Use a comma before and, but, or, nor, for, so, or yet to join two independent clauses that form a compound sentence. What is a compound sentence? A compound sentence is a sentence that has 2 independent clauses.
What is a serial comma? The serial comma is a comma that comes before the final item in a list of three or more items. It comes before the conjunction (“and” or “or”): “John, Mandy, and Lupita.” Without the serial comma, the same phrase would be “John, Mandy and Lupita.”
The basic idea is that if the name (in the above example, “Jessie”) is the only thing in the world described by the identifier (“my oldest friend”), use a comma before the name (and after it as well, unless you've come to the end of the sentence). If not, don't use any commas.

With the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her son Charles has become King Charles III.
There are three general rules for suffixes. First, double the final consonant if the vowel sound is short. Double the consonant if the original word is two syllables long and ends with a vowel before a consonant. Finally, if the suffix starts with a vowel and the base word has a silent "e" at the end, drop the "e."
For suffix on birth certificate. 1st generation — no suffix. 2nd generation — Jr. is born, and 1st generation becomes Sr. 3rd generation — III is born. 4th generation — IV is born.
If you choose to use III for your son non-traditionally, you'll have to be resigned to people assuming his father's name is the same as his, and people potentially acting disgruntled that a generation was skipped. If you're willing to accept these consequences, there is no Suffix Police who will keep you from using it.

Traditionally, the British upper class has used multiple names to indicate family connections, even going so far as changing surnames to reflect these bonds. In France, it is normal for citizens to have multiple middle names, though all names except the surname are referred to as “first names” on official documents.

A matronymic is a personal name or a parental name based on the given name of one's mother, grandmother, or any female ancestor. It is the female equivalent of a patronymic. Around the world, matronymic surnames are far less common than patronymic surnames.
It's not common to use for females, but it can (and has been) used on occasion. There are a few arguments for why this is, but one is that historically greater significance has been placed on male heirs and the male family line, leading to 'junior' often being used for boys and men.
