To shower after a lumpectomy, wait for your surgeon's approval (usually 24-48 hours), use gentle, mild soap, avoid direct water pressure by keeping your back to the shower, pat the incision dry, and avoid baths/soaking until healed; wear a supportive bra and manage drains carefully, often with a lanyard. Always follow your surgeon's specific wound care instructions for dressings, tapes (Steri-Strips), and when you can fully resume normal showering.
You may shower 24 to 48 hours after surgery, if your doctor okays it. Pat the incision dry. Do not take a bath for the first 2 weeks, or until your doctor tells you it is okay.
You can absolutely wash your hair, but we advise being very mindful of your arm movements, especially during the first two weeks after surgery. You'll want to avoid raising your arms above shoulder height, as this can put stress on the surgical area and interfere with healing.
Your wound should heal within 6 to 8 weeks. But it may take several months for your affected breast or chest area and arm to feel 'normal' again, particularly if you've had surgery under your arm. In some cases, the affected area will always feel different.
You can shower with your drain 24 to 48 hours after surgery. But before getting into the shower, pin the drain to a belt or similar item around your waist. You don't need to cover the insertion site but try to avoid spraying water directly on it. Don't use soap directly on your drain or the insertion site.
If you have a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy with or without a sentinel lymph node biopsy: Avoid any activity that bounces or jostles the breast for two weeks after surgery (i.e.: running, jumping, using the elliptical machine). Perform shoulder range of motion as tolerated, beginning 1-2 days after surgery.
It's normal to have some pain or discomfort in the weeks or months after breast surgery, lymph node removal or radiotherapy. Usually, this pain will improve within about 3 months.
Immediately After Lumpectomy: The First Few Days
You can usually run warm water in the shower over your surgical incisions but do not rub or touch the site. Pat the area dry. Avoid baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs until your incision is healed. Do not use deodorant under the affected arm for several weeks until the incision(s) are healed.
Use a no-rinse shampoo cap! It's the simplest way to clean hair without needing a shower or bath.
Most people can start driving after a lumpectomy as soon as they are no longer taking strong pain medication and they can use their arm without pain. For some people, this is within a couple of days and for others it can be a few weeks.
It is important to eliminate caffeine from your diet for at least three weeks after your surgery. Caffeine may be a hard habit to kick, but will be well worth it for healing. Caffeine can cause dehydration which could slow your healing process and increase your risk of constipation associated with pain medication.
How long should you sleep in a bra after a lumpectomy? It will depend on the extent of your surgery. If you have a small incision, wearing a compression bra for two days and nights may be sufficient. For more invasive surgeries, you may need to sleep in your bra for up to two weeks.
Once home, you should shower daily. However, it is important to avoid submersion which means no baths, swimming pools or hot tubs until all incisions are healed and your surgeon has given you the all clear.
Most people having a lumpectomy, surgical biopsy or sentinel node biopsy don't need surgical drains. Most patients need to use surgical drains for about two weeks following surgery, or once there's less than 30 cubic centimeters (cc) of drainage in 24 hours.

Postoperatively, you may be given a wireless bra to be worn over your dressings. You may also plan on bringing a sportsbra or front closure bra with you as this will be easier to wear immediately after surgery.
The procedure typically takes under an hour and takes place via a relatively small incision generally between three to four centimeters. The incision is usually right over the tumor, but it can also be made in the areola, under the breast, or in the armpit.
Return to normal activities and work
You may feel ready to go back to work or start normal activities after a couple of weeks. Some people need longer to recover and there is no right or wrong recovery time.
Pain in the breast or chest area
You may have aches, twinges or sharp pains in the breast or chest area. These are usually mild. They may continue for months or years, but they usually become milder and less frequent over time.
Short-term side effects of lymph node removal
This surgery is one of many breast cancer treatments available. Unlike a mastectomy, which involves removal of all or a large portion of the breast tissue, a lumpectomy is not considered major surgery and women who have a lumpectomy often go home the same day of their procedure.
You may want to sleep on the side that has not been operated on. And you may want to use a pillow to support the affected breast while lying on your side. Avoid strenuous activities, such as biking, jogging, weightlifting, or aerobic exercise, for 1 month or until your doctor says it is okay.
Gentle and Controlled Flow: Shower from your incisions so the water runs away from them. Pour water carefully over your hair with a handheld shower head or cup, avoiding the incision. Mild Shampoo: For the first few weeks following surgery, use a moderate, scent-free shampoo.
