The Mind Flayer's Demogorgon Control Theory Explained
In Stranger Things season 1, Will is attacked and captured by the Demogorgon. His vanishing kicks off the plot of the whole show and he survives for a long, lonely week in the mysterious Upside-Down after being snatched by the toothy-mawed monster.
He hid in the shed but the Demogorgon caught him and took him to the Upside Down. Now, some fans believe Will hurt himself enough to bleed even if slightly when he crashed his bike, and that's why the Demogorgon went after him.
Though Will eventually escaped the Upside Down, his time there has profoundly affected his character and created a link between him and Vecna, the villain controlling of the parallel realm. It's heartbreaking to see how Will's stay in the Upside Down has taken its toll on him and affected him in the real world.
He was an expert at hiding from the Demogorgon on various occasions, which became key to his survival. Through his D&D experience, Will knew it was important to help others, but he was too late when it came to Barb. He did, however, manage to save Nancy from the Demogorgon when she found herself in the Upside Down.
It seems that Will was abducted by a Demogorgon on his late-night bike ride back home from Mike's house. Inside the Upside Down, Will tried to evade the creature that kidnapped him by hiding in familiar places, like the Upside Down version of his fort, Castle Byers.
Joyce and Chief Hopper found an unconscious Will Byers strung up in the Upside Down version of the public library; he had a tendril in his mouth, extending through his trachea, and into his lungs. Hopper pulled it out of his throat before shooting and destroying it.
Will's Connection To Vecna & The Mind Flayer Explained
While trapped in the Upside Down, Will either ingested enough of its particles to gain a connection to the realm or was purposefully granted a connection to Vecna in a way not yet fully established.
As Vecna continued to go after young victims in order to open more portals, he set his sights on Max Mayfield, since she was investigating the deaths of Chrissy and another student named Fred Benson with help from her friends (including Dustin, Steve, and her boyfriend Lucas).
The theory predicts that Vecna wants to regain his human form, and he will use Will to do so in Season 5. Knowing that Vecna singled out Will in Season 1, it's a reasonable theory, but it might go too far. After all, Vecna already has a human form, and he has vowed to eliminate humanity.
The Duffer Brothers had Vecna planned from the start, which is how they were able to tie his character into earlier seasons. Stranger Things revealed Vecna was also behind the Mind Flayer that appeared in season 2.
Using past traumas to break down his victims, Vecna brought Nancy to the pool where Barb was killed by the Demogorgon and revealed her mangled corpse.
The slug Will coughed up is a baby Demogorgon. Though the actors were a little hesitant to confirm this on the after-show, it seems pretty apparent that the slug Will coughed up at the end of “Stranger Things” Season 1 was Demogorgon spawn, or at least a baby Demodog.

Vecna is the primary leader of The Upside Down Hive Mind. The Mind Flayer seemed to have been connected to this Hive Mind and was possibly the leader of the Hive Mind before Vecna came and connected to himself making The Mind Flayer's Hive Mind into Vecna's Hive Mind.
In season 4, it's revealed that Will's connection is to Vecna, who created the Mind Flayer after being banished to the Upside Down by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

He sent fragments of the Creel House flying at Max in a last-ditch attempt to stop her, but it was too late: she had returned to reality. After surviving the attack, Max listened to the song at all times to protect herself from Vecna.
Next up, the viewers go on to theorise that One/Vecna is actually Eleven's dad. Yep, told you it was wild. The theory claims that Brenner wanted to create a child with stronger powers, so he waited until One was old enough to become a father.
Originally appearing in the Greyhawk campaign setting, Vecna was described as a powerful wizard who became a lich. He was eventually destroyed, and his left hand and left eye were the only parts of his body to survive.
Connecting to the Mind Flayer's hive mind allowed Henry Creel to become the version of Vecna that audiences see in Stranger Things season 4, controlling the Demobats, Demodogs, and Demogorgons across the Upside Down and the real world.
Eventually, the Demogorgon found them, breaking into the room and attacking them. Eleven confronted the creature, pinning it against the blackboard with her mind. After wishing farewell to her friends, she proceeded to disintegrate the creature, vanishing as well in the process.
Demogorgon is first mentioned in the commentary on Statius's Thebaid often attributed in manuscripts to a Lactantius Placidus, (c. 350–400 AD). The Lactantius Placidus commentary became the most common medieval commentary on the poem by Statius and is transmitted in most early editions up to 1600.
