Keeping Your Heartworm Positive Dog Happy
Give several; short leash walks during the off-temperature times of the day. These are SHORT walks, 10 minutes max at a leisurely pace. Provide more exploration and sniffing activities than actual walking.
That means your dog should be restricted to a very small area at all times throughout the entire treatment period (the use of a small cage or crate may be necessary), and continuing for 6 to 8 weeks after the last injection of melarsomine (the drug that kills adult heartworms).
During the two-month period (30 days after each injection), the dog must adhere to strict exercise restrictions. Monitor the dog closely for worsening symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, or persistent lethargy.
It is critical that your pet be kept under strict exercise restriction and confinement for 4 weeks after each phase of the heartworm treatment. Life threatening complications may arise if your pet is not confined.
A slight decrease in appetite may be noticed. This should only last 1 to 2 days after the injections and your vet should be notified should this continue. Fever and depression may sometimes occur. This is usually a reaction to the drug.
If your dog loves to play throw the ball, don't do that for the couple months they're needing rest. If there are things that get your dog real excited around the house, jumping up and down on the couch, running around when the doorbell rings, try and limit those things.
In some cases, the dog may return to a foster home between injections if that is more convenient. Strict bed rest for 45 days following the injections is mandatory to minimize complications as the dog's body processes the dead worms. This rest period is critical to the dog's recovery.
Most dogs who receive timely and appropriate treatment for heartworm go on to live full, healthy lives. However, if the disease was advanced, some may have lasting damage to the heart or lungs that requires ongoing care. That's why prevention is always the best medicine.
Another clear indicator of heartworm disease is lethargy. If your dog normally has a lot of energy but is now spending a lot more time sleeping or avoiding interacting with you, this may be due to their heart having to work harder to pump blood.
Treatment for heartworm can cause serious complications for your pet's health and can be potentially toxic to the dog's body. Many dogs experience soreness and swelling at the site of their injections. The most severe side effects are related to a large number of worms suddenly dying.
Do the heartworm treatment injections hurt? The injections are given within the muscle and can indeed be uncomfortable, but the inflammation that develops within the days following creates the most discomfort. Restlessness, panting, trembling and reduced appetite can all be signs that the dog is uncomfortable.
