Most people stop moving their bowels about 2 – 3 hours after finishing the solution. People are different and some have liquid movements until the time of the procedure. The instrument used during the colonoscopy will suction out any liquid left in the bowel. You will not have an “accident” during the procedure.
A suction device may be used to remove any liquid stool. The health care provider will check your colon and may take photos. If a polyp is seen, it may be taken out. Or it may be left in the colon until a future procedure is performed.
As the doctor could miss important details by performing the colonoscopy without the bowel being empty, the procedure may need repeating or rescheduling.
Your colon needs to be clean of any stool so we can see the lining of your colon. Please note: your procedure will be cancelled if you are unable to complete the preparation needed to clean your colon. Your stools need to be clear prior to your procedure.

If your last bowel movements were clear enough that you were able to see the bottom of the toilet you should be fine. You must, however, continue to drink ALL of the prep solution. It is ok if you have some flecks of material. The yellow color is a result of the bile that normally colors the feces.

Your doctor and nurse will be in the room at all times. The procedure usually takes about 20-45 minutes. The amount of time depends on how well your at-home preparation worked, the length of your colon, and how many polyps are found and removed. How comfortable you are also affects how long the procedure takes.
Colonoscopies performed in the afternoon (PM) have been shown to have lower adenoma detection rates (ADR) compared to those in the morning (AM). Endoscopist fatigue has been suggested as a possible reason. Colonoscopies tend to be technically more challenging in female patients.
Side effects of some preps include nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, thirst, dizziness, and dehydration. If you feel nauseous or vomit, take a 30 minute break, rinse your mouth, and then continue drinking your prep.
After your nausea has decreased or stopped, you can start the bowel prep again, but you should drink it at a slower rate. Sometimes, drinking too much, too quickly is too much for your system to handle. Another tip is to make sure the prep is chilled.
Preparing for your Colonoscopy Helpful Hints…. Remember - the goal of the prep is to get cleaned out. When the color of what you are passing is clear or cloudy yellow with some flecks, then you are clean. If you are passing brown stool or brown water then you may not be adequately prepared.
After taking the medicine, your child should pass a large amount of stool within 24 hours. There are no food restrictions during the clean-out. Your child should have almost clear, watery stools by the end of the next day. If the medicine does not work or you do not know if it worked, call your child's doctor's office.
You should get a letter or a call with your results 2 to 3 weeks after a colonoscopy. If a GP sent you for the test, they should also get a copy of your results. Call the hospital if you have not heard anything after 3 weeks.
In fact, most patients feel up to returning to normal activities within 24 hours. You may keep most clothing on for upper endoscopy as well as comfortable shirt and socks for colonoscopy. Women may keep their bra on for the procedure. Please do not wear lotions, oils or perfumes/cologne to the center due to the monitoring devices.
Be sure to drink at least 12 tall glasses (about 8-10 ounces each) of clear liquids throughout the day in addition to what you drink with your bowel prep. Taking Your Prep: By the day before your test you should already have your “bowel prep” medicine.
