He actually asked the Sorting Hat to place him in Hufflepuff, as he was intimidated by Gryffindor's reputation for bravery, but the Sorting Hat didn't agree. They debated it for so long, that he was close to being what is known as a Hatstall, which is a term for any student whose Sorting takes longer than five minutes.
From the wiki: Neville Longbottom — The Sorting Hat was determined to place him in Gryffindor, but because Neville found Gryffindor's reputation for bravery intimidating, he asked to be put in Hufflepuff. The two argued silently for "a long time" before the Hat finally got its way and declared him a Gryffindor.
The Sword appearing for Neville in his time of need is Neville's justification that he is a true Gryffindor, as he had always doubted his placement in the house since the beginning, wondering why he wasn't sorted into Hufflepuff.
At his core, Neville Longbottom was always a sweet, shy, and good hearted boy. And in that sense, Hufflepuff seemed like the ideal house for him. However, Hufflepuff would have catered to the person that Neville already was, whereas being in Gryffindor carved Neville into the person he was always meant to be.
Ron Weasley
Being Harry Potter's best friend certainly needed heaps of bravery – hence the Sorting Hat not messing around in sorting Ron into Gryffindor, the house of his parents, brothers and sister.
Hermione was a prominent example of this as, on the surface, she appeared like someone who would fit right into Ravenclaw. But beyond her interests, her values define her as someone with a take-charge personality and bravery to spare. Unlike Ravenclaws, she didn't apply knowledge in unique ways.
Hufflepuff has produced the least amount of Dark wizards
'They didn't want to show off, they weren't being reckless, that's the essence of Hufflepuff. ' In fact, the most evil deed we can remember a Hufflepuff ever doing was Ernie Macmillan wearing a 'Potter Stinks' badge.
Slytherins and Hufflepuffs share a bond that is nothing short of being platonic soulmates. Hufflepuffs are the only ones patient enough to really get to know someone without any judgment. Since Slytherins are often on edge, they truly appreciate the safe space that Hufflepuffs create.
At Hogwarts, she, along with her sisters, was sorted into Slytherin. It is suggested in the novels that, as a student, Bellatrix associated with a group of students – including Rodolphus Lestrange, Severus Snape, Avery, Evan Rosier and Wilkes – who nearly all became Death Eaters.
Hufflepuff is my favorite house in some ways. There comes a point in the book where each house has a chance to rise up to a certain challenge.
Ginny is a pureblood witch born 11 August 1981, the seventh child and only daughter of Arthur and Molly Weasley. She attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and is sorted into Gryffindor house, along with the rest of her family.
Neither of them is Slytherin's heir. Although, as Dumbledore says, Harry's ability to speak Parseltongue is a skill accidentally transferred by Slytherin's actual heir, Voldemort, when he tried to kill Harry as a baby. So perhaps this is one myth with a bit of truth to it.
During the Welcoming Feast, Zacharias was sorted into the house of Hufflepuff and would share a dormitory with Ernie Macmillan, Justin Finch-Fletchley, and Wayne Hopkins. Zacharias did not fit the normal Hufflepuff sorting, as he showed selfishness and cowardice.

They're One-Dimensional. There were bad Gryffindors and good Slytherins, but Hufflepuffs were one-note characters, portrayed without much nuance. They usually never ruffled feathers or attracted attention to themselves, often even referred to as the "emotional support" House.
If this is you, then you're not the only one – but don't be disheartened. Harry Potter battled with the Sorting Hat over his desperation not to be placed in Slytherin. Years later, his son Albus arrived at Hogwarts with similar preconceptions.
Nearly all of those recruited were from Slytherin House. However there may have been recruits from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and even from foreign schools within the ranks as well. There were presumably no Hufflepuff Death Eaters (Hufflepuff House boasted of being the only house never to produce any Dark Wizards).
So, there we have it! Any Hogwarts house would have been lucky to count Luna Lovegood amongst its numbers, but with apologies to Gryffindor, Slytherin and Huffepuff – we reckon the Sorting Hat got it right with Ravenclaw! Draco had several reasons for lying to Bellatrix, including the fact that he was never a bad person. Moreover, he no longer found working for the Dark Lord appealing and hated how Voldemort treated his family. He did not intend to harm anyone and believed Harry was the only person capable of defeating Voldemort.
Slytherin has been at the top of this list since Hogwarts Legacy came out, so it comes as no surprise to see it continue to hold its position. On the other hand, other positions have changed since release, as Hufflepuff was below Ravenclaw in the initial Hogwarts Legacy rankings.
The Hufflepuff Traits
As you can see in the picture above from Pottermore, Hufflepuffs are loyal, patient, fair, hard-working and true. I fit into these traits so easily. My loyalty doesn't just lie with my friends, but also with my work.
Helga Hufflepuff
The founder of Hufflepuff House is by far the greatest Hufflepuff of all time. Along with Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff founded Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
This is because only the Hufflepuff Common Room contains the portrait of the former Minister of Magic, "Eldritch Diggory." Mr. Diggory will ask Hufflepuff players for help with something after Professor Fig has been gone for a while and will begin the Hufflepuff exclusive Quest "Prisoner of Love."
In the world of Harry Potter as we know it, there are no recorded instances of a person who was sorted into Hufflepuff ever becoming a Death Eater, or any other kind of Dark Wizard for that matter.
Cedric's death is a major plot point in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, in which Harry and Ginny Weasley's son Albus uses a Time-Turner and prevents Cedric's death. Due to his humiliation in the Triwizard Tournament, Cedric eventually becomes a Death Eater and kills Neville Longbottom.
