Morning urine is often yellow and smelly because it's concentrated after hours without drinking, making waste products like urea (which smells like ammonia) more potent and darker in color; this is usually normal, but strong, sweet, or foul smells, especially with other symptoms, can signal dehydration, infections, diabetes, or certain foods/medications.
After a night's sleep, urine is more concentrated and odorous as well as brighter yellow in color. Dehydration also increases urine concentration, causing stronger smelling urine.
Some people find that their urine smells stronger and is darker first thing in the morning. This is when it's more concentrated, or when you're dehydrated.
A core function of the kidneys is to clean your blood by expelling waste products and excess fluid as urine. So if you've noticed a change in your urine — such as color, cloudiness or unusual smell — it could be a sign that your kidney health is at risk.
It's common for pregnant women to notice a change in their urine smell. The change could be caused by various factors, including pregnancy hormones such as human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and dietary changes that affect the vitamins, minerals, and proteins in your diet.
Urinary or bladder infection occurs more often in women because the urethra is shorter and closer to the anus. This means that smelly urine in women can often be caused by infections such as this. In addition to bacteria, viruses or fungi can also trigger an infection.
Classic signs and symptoms of pregnancy
Trimethylaminuria. In this condition, also called fish odor syndrome, your body can't break down a compound called trimethylamine. This chemical on its own smells like rotten eggs, rotting fish, or garbage. As trimethylamine collects in your body, your sweat, breath, and urine will smell rotten or fishy.
If your kidneys aren't working properly, you may notice one or more of the following signs:
Stay Hydrated
Water helps flush out toxins and waste products from your body, allowing your kidneys to function more efficiently. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, and consider increasing your intake if you're active or live in a hot climate.
Stick to drinking six to eight glasses of water a day or by having a glass of fruit juice that is noncitrus to dilute the odor. Cranberry juice is a great juice to reduce the acidity in your urine. If you cannot drink that much, ask your doctor if you can try taking deodorizing tablets or supplements.
You should worry about urine smell and see a doctor if it's persistent, accompanied by fever, pain/burning during urination, cloudy or bloody urine, or if it smells sweet (potential diabetes) or rotten (potential infection/kidney stones). While often temporary due to dehydration or food, persistent strong or unusual odors, especially with other symptoms, warrant medical attention to rule out UTIs, diabetes, or other conditions.
Bladder infection. Cystitis (irritation of the bladder) Dehydration — when the body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to work as it should. Diabetic ketoacidosis (in which the body has high levels of blood acids called ketones)
If your urine smells like ammonia and is a dark yellow or honey color the most probable cause is dehydration. Try cutting down on coffee, sugary drinks & alcohol, and drink 2-3 liters of water per day to stop your pee from smelling like ammonia in the future.
See a health care professional if you have symptoms of a bladder problem, such as trouble urinating, a loss of bladder control, waking to use the bathroom, pelvic pain, or leaking urine.
Patients affected by trimethylaminuria will often have fishy-smelling urine. Trimethylaminuria is a genetic disorder in which affected individuals have an enzymatic deficiency that makes them unable to metabolize TMA. Because they cannot metabolize TMA, affected individuals have a buildup of TMA in their bodies.
Generally, earlier stages are known as 1 to 3. And as kidney disease progresses, you may notice the following symptoms. Nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, loss of appetite, swelling via feet and ankles, dry, itchy skin, shortness of breath, trouble sleeping, urinating either too much or too little.
Water is the best beverage for supporting kidney health. It helps flush out toxins, maintains electrolyte balance, and prevents dehydration. Drinking at least 8–10 glasses of water daily is essential for anyone in recovery, especially those enrolled in an Alcohol Treatment Program or Drug Rehab Programs.
You can check kidney function at home using at-home test kits for urine (detecting protein/albumin) or finger-prick blood tests (checking creatinine/eGFR), often with smartphone apps for analysis, or by monitoring symptoms like increased nighttime urination (nocturia), swelling, or changes in urine (blood, foam) and discussing results with a doctor, as home tests screen but don't replace professional diagnosis.
Liver disease can make urine smell musty, sweet, or like ammonia due to the buildup of toxins (like dimethyl disulfide/methyl mercaptan) that the failing liver can't process, leading to a specific scent known as foetor hepaticus, often accompanied by dark urine and jaundice. This ammonia-like odor comes from excess urea breakdown, while a sweet smell can also signal uncontrolled diabetes, so a medical evaluation is crucial.
Assuming it's not due to diet or dehydration, the most common cause of foul-smelling urine is a urinary tract infection, or UTI. One of the reasons stale urine smells so bad is that bacteria start breaking down the ammonia it contains.
Lemon water is one of the most recommended natural remedies for smelly urine. It acts as a natural diuretic, promotes hydration, and helps neutralise the strong ammonia-like smell. Simply squeeze half a lemon into warm water and drink it first thing in the morning.
Early Pregnancy Symptoms
If you have a regular monthly menstrual cycle, the earliest and most reliable sign of pregnancy is a missed period. In the first few weeks of pregnancy you may have a bleed similar to a very light period, with some spotting or only losing a little blood. This is called implantation bleeding.
