In the movie, Will gives an emotional goodbye to Stella once she wakes up from her lung transplant after rallying all her loved ones to put lights outside her window. On the other hand, the book has Will watching the YouTube video Stella made, similar to the movie, eight months after their break up.
Stella and Wil both have cystic fibrosis and are supposed to stay six feet apart. But they fall in love and decide to take one foot back from their disease – hence the 'five feet apart' of the movie's title.
Summary: Chapter 3. Back in Stella's room, Stella asks Barb about Will, and Barb explains that Will is in a clinical trial for treatment of B. cepacia. Barb warns Stella to stay away from Will, as Stella would be taken off the transplant list if she contracted B.
He asks her to close her eyes because he won't be able to walk away if she's watching him. Stella tearfully hesitates but does as he asks, and Will leaves. Previously, Will had handed Stella's parents a wrapped gift which they now give to Stella.
The doctors follow through with the lung surgery, but Will realizes he has to get away from Stella so she will have a chance to live a healthy life. He packs up and leaves the hospital. Eight months later, Stella's new lungs are working well, and she's enjoying good health.
So, it was not surprising that the release of "Five Feet Apart," a love story centering on two young people living with cystic fibrosis, caused a quite a stir. Cystic fibrosis is an illness that is not often portrayed in television or film.
A heartbreaking and tear-jerking love story
The story follows Stella Grant and Will Newman, who both have cystic fibrosis. People with CF aren't supposed to get within six feet, because they can end up catching each other's bacteria. Stella has OCD, she is diligent about her treatment schedule.
Initially using positive emotions to channel magic, Luna decided that Stella's magic wasn't powerful enough, and so quickly taught her to use negative emotions. This resulted in her losing control of her power and accidentally blinding her best friend Rikki .
Stella — who admits she has control issues — attempts to make over Will's medical plan, and, along the way, the two teens fall head over heels for one another. The only issue is that Stella and Will can never actually touch — or even be within six feet of one another, due to the fear of cross-infection.
Five Feet Apart is a emotional rollercoaster with a lot of great educational values. I personally think this book should be read by people 13+ only because of a few minor mentions of sex, which is expected from two teens not able to touch.
Five Feet Apart is just one representation of life with cystic fibrosis. CF is a complex disease and the types and severity of symptoms can differ widely from person to person. As a work of fiction, the film portrays only a handful of individuals' experiences with CF and may be dramatized for the sake of the story.
Unable to touch each other for fear of endangering them, Stella and Will continue on with constant physical space between them, as Stella begins to question whether she is really living a life or just going through the motions for treatment.
People with CF can't be together.
The good news is CF is not at all contagious or dangerous to healthy people.
On 'Five Feet Apart' Sequel, 'All This Time'
Authors of Five Feet Apart were confirmed to adapt the screenplay and executive produce the upcoming flick.
About half will survive for at least five years after having a lung transplant, with many people living for at least 10 years. There have also been cases of people living for 20 years or more after a lung transplant.

The previews that aired on television showed two teenagers falling in love. Both of the characters had cystic fibrosis (CF) and were in and out of hospitals as they started a relationship. Although the movie was titled Five Feet Apart, it is based on the 6-foot rule that applies to people with cystic fibrosis.
