It is important to note that it is common and normal for one breast to be slightly different in size, shape, or feel than the other; no two breasts are identical [1]. Many people have subtle asymmetries. However, if you notice a new or significant change in how your right breast feels compared to your left, or any unusual symptoms, it warrants a consultation with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
If you notice a change in your breasts that makes one look or feel different from the other, it's a good idea to see a healthcare provider. They'll likely recommend a mammogram to check it out. Breast changes can occur for harmless reasons, but it's good to know what the reason is and have it in your medical records.
Finding a change in your breast isn't a reason to panic. Some breast changes are typical. For instance, if you have periods, you might notice that your breasts change at certain times in the menstrual cycle. It's common for the breasts to feel different in different places.
Early warning signs of invasive breast cancer
Change in breast color. Increase in breast size or shape (over a short period of time) Changes in touch (may feel hard, tender or warm) Peeling or flaking of the nipple skin.
If both breasts feel the same, the lumpiness is probably normal. As you get to know your breasts better by doing breast self-exams, you should be able to tell the difference between your normal lumpiness and what may be a change.
Breast unevenness can be a natural developmental outcome for some women. Often, minor differences aren't even noticeable and are considered normal. Significant differences that exist beyond puberty or occur after puberty require medical attention.
The "three-finger test" for breasts refers to the technique used in a breast self-exam (BSE) where you use the pads of your three middle fingers (index, middle, ring) to feel for lumps or changes, applying light, medium, and firm pressure to cover all breast tissue and the armpit, moving in circular or vertical patterns to detect new lumps or thickening. This method, often done while lying down or showering, helps you become familiar with your normal breast texture, but it's a supplement to, not a replacement for, regular clinical exams and mammograms for early detection.
Symptoms (beyond lumps) to look for include:
The older a woman is, the more likely she is to get breast cancer. Rates of breast cancer are low in women under 40. About 4% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. are younger than 40 [6]. Rates begin to increase after age 40 and are highest in women over age 70 (see Figure 2.1 below).
The most common sign of breast cancer is a lump or mass. It is usually hard, painless, and has uneven edges. Some lumps, however, can be soft and rounded. If you find one we recommend you contact your physician — a primary care doctor or a gynecologist — to have the lump evaluated.
Symptoms
A cancerous lump is usually hard, not soft or squishy. And it often has angular, irregular, asymmetrical edges, as opposed to being smooth, Dr. Comander says. In order for you to feel a cancerous lump, it probably has to be rather large and closer to the surface of the skin.
Even as you go through “the change,” you can still experience tingling in the breast—hormonal fluctuations especially during perimenopause and then into menopause (most notably in women taking oral contraceptives or hormone therapy, according to Harvard Health Publishing, can be associated with this sensation as well.
Breast tissue naturally has a bumpy texture. Some women have lumpier breasts than others. In most cases, this lumpiness is no cause to worry. If the lumpiness can be felt throughout the breast and feels like your other breast, then it's probably normal breast tissue.
One breast may hang a little lower, not that any young woman's breasts hang, of course, but if one breast seems to be a little lower than the other, that's also normal.
Rates of breast cancer in the U.S. vary by race and ethnicity. Non-Hispanic white women and non-Hispanic Black women have the highest incidence of breast cancer (rate of new breast cancer cases) overall [336]. Hispanic women have the lowest incidence (see Figure 2.3 below) [336].
Commonly developing from the mammary glands or ducts, such malignant lumps generally (about 50 percent) appear in the upper, outer quadrant of the breast, extending into the armpit, where tissue is thicker than elsewhere.
Incidence rates
Although most breast cancers are found in women older than 45 years, incidence among younger women increased an average of 0.7% per year from 2001 to 2022 (Figure 1). Incidence rates were stable from 2001 to 2012, then increased 1.1% per year from 2012 to 2022.
Signs and symptoms:
Redness, rash or blotchiness of the breast. Some women report that it looks like a bug bite. Pain and/or soreness of the breast. Lump, thickening or dimpling of the skin of the breast.
Twenty potential signs of cancer include **unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, unusual lumps or swelling, skin changes (sores that don't heal, new moles, color changes), changes in bowel/bladder habits, persistent cough or shortness of breath, hoarseness/voice changes, difficulty swallowing, persistent indigestion, unexplained pain, night sweats, unusual bleeding/bruising, mouth sores that won't heal, loss of appetite, fever, changes in vision/headaches, swelling in lymph nodes, nipple changes, painful urination/ejaculation, and swelling in the face/neck; these warrant a doctor's visit if they last more than a few weeks.
Conclusions. Qualitative analysis of articles has revealed a possible association between stress and cancer, especially regarding stressful life events.
New alternatives and enhancements to mammograms include 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis), which is now standard, and emerging technologies like AI-enhanced MRI, Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM), Photoacoustic Tomography (PACT), and Cone-Beam Breast CT (CBBCT), offering better detection, especially for dense breasts, by providing more detailed images, highlighting blood flow, or reducing discomfort and radiation, though many are still in development or used as supplemental tools.

Your left thumb should be in front of your breast. Gently pinch your breasts between your thumb and middle fingers. If that point is above the nipple, you pass and may not require a breast lift procedure. If you pinch your breast below the nipple, you fail and may require a breast lift.
