Before the United Kingdom's dominance (Pax Britannica), France was arguably the leading European power during the 17th and early 18th centuries, especially under Louis XIV, but the Dutch Republic (Holland) was a major economic and naval force preceding France's peak, while older empires like the Roman Empire, Mongol Empire, and Persian Empire were significant global powers in earlier eras.
We all probably know the definition of superpower vs great power, and I think if you factor in knowledge of the globe vs relative knowledge of the known world, Rome easily classifies as the world's first superpower (followed by the Caliphate, Mongols, British, and United States). 4th Century BCE Rome is a small power.
United Kingdom (1588–)
At its height, the British Empire was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. In 1815–1914 the Pax Britannica was the most powerful unitary authority in history due to the Royal Navy's unprecedented naval predominance.
Britain still had colonies and businesses in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific too. After defeating Napoleonic France in 1815, Britain became the world's only superpower for more than a century, and its empire became even larger. The empire continued to expand during the 19th century.
United States. The United States of America is a North American nation that is the world's most dominant economic and military power. Likewise, its cultural imprint spans the world, led in large part by its popular culture expressed in music, movies and television.

Britain was the largest country in history and the biggest world power ever.
China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States are often referred to as great powers by academics due to "their political and economic dominance of the global arena". These five nations are the only states to have permanent seats with veto power on the UN Security Council.

In the build up to the Second World War, the United States was the major power with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in the world. In 1938, the United States also had the highest overall GDP in the world, and by a significant margin, however differences in GDP per person were much smaller.
Through its colonial empire, large population, and centralized government, France became a superpower, lasting from the reign of King Louis XIV in the 17th century until Napoleon's defeat in 1815.
There are three superpowers in the world; 1. USA 2. Russia 3. China The rest are either Middle Powers or vassal colonies/client states.
