When the Joker became obsessing over destroying the Bat-Family, he decided to arrange for his face to be surgically removed. According to the Joker, he did this to symbolize how even without his, "Mask" he was still the joker where-as Batman's Robins and Bat-Girls' identities were only mask-deep.
Batman finally discovers the Joker's real name
Thus, the Joker's real name is none other than Jack Oswald White; however, the story about the discovery of his identity has a storyline.
Throughout the comic, he uses his face as a mask of sorts, stapling it over whatever is his face now, putting it on other people, and just playing around with it. It's a mask, but it's also his real face. Just like how with Batman, his mask is his real face.
