You should be screened for Chagas disease if you were born in or lived for over six months in Mexico, Central, or South America, have family with Chagas, experienced kissing bug contact, or are immunocompromised; pregnant individuals with these risk factors and their newborns are a high priority for testing to prevent congenital transmission.
People who live or lived in parts of Central America and South America are at higher risk of having Chagas disease. In the United States, Chagas disease risk is higher in southern states (where there are more kissing bugs) than in northern states.
Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a major health issue in 21 countries in the Americas, affecting 6 to 7 million people. It leads to significant health and economic burdens, with around 30,000 new cases and 12,000 deaths each year. In Australia, there are 2,000 to 3,000 infected individuals.
Blood collection facilities also test potential blood donors for the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), which causes Chagas disease. This infectious disease, which is spread by the bite of certain bugs, occurs in Mexico, Central and South America and, rarely in North America.
Key points. All blood donations are tested for multiple disease markers, including, but not limited to, Hepatitis virus types, HIV, West Nile virus and Zika virus.
Health care providers may contact their state health department or CDC with questions regarding testing for Chagas disease. Testing is available at no charge to physicians or patients.
In the acute phase of infection, healthcare providers might observe parasites circulating in the blood. They can diagnose Chagas disease by detecting these parasites in a blood smear through microscopic examination. This involves preparing and staining both thick and thin blood smears to visualize the parasites.
Worms are a very common source of illness for both adults and children, so experts recommend that deworming should be done two times a year, or every six months, beginning at the age of two years. Deworming is the process of eliminating intestinal parasites, such as worms, using medication.

We tested over 1500 kissing bugs, and we found 54% were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Infection prevalence varied by kissing bug species. We also determined the T. cruzi strain types in infected bugs: we found TcI and TcIV.
Malaria Parasite (Plasmodium)
Not only a killer parasite, but one of the world's biggest killers, the malaria parasite is responsible for around 600,000 deaths a year.
Despite many studies, there is still no vaccines for Chagas Disease (CD), which affects approximately 7 million people mainly in Latin America. To make matters worse, the only two drugs available have proved efficacy only when administered during the acute phase of the disease.
After the incubation period of 1 to 2 weeks, infected patients enter the acute phase of Chagas disease.
Some, but not all, parasitic infections can be detected by testing your blood. Blood tests look for a specific parasite infection; there is no blood test that will look for all parasitic infections.
Although the pathogenesis of Chagas disease is often attributed to autoimmune mechanisms, definitive proof of anti-self responses as the primary cause of disease in T. cruzi-infected hosts is lacking.
Symptoms of other worm infections
Combantrin-1 with Mebendazole is a single dose treatment for threadworm in adults and children of 2 years and over. It is also effective against other worm infections such as roundworm, hookworm and whipworm.
You can spot threadworms in your poo. They look like pieces of white thread. You might also see them around your child's bottom (anus). The worms usually come out at night while your child is sleeping.
But many people might still have long-lasting illnesses and be at risk for serious complications. If you think you could be at risk, talk to a healthcare provider about screening for Chagas disease.
You know you might have parasites through digestive issues (diarrhea, bloating, pain), fatigue, unexplained weight loss, skin problems (rashes, itchiness), sleep disturbances (insomnia, teeth grinding), increased appetite, muscle aches, or even seeing worms or eggs in your stool; however, many infections have few or no symptoms, so a doctor's diagnosis via stool sample, blood tests, or other imaging is needed for confirmation.
Currently, Chagas disease PCR testing is only available at the CDC at no charge.
Testing for Parasites

Elecsys Chagas is an in vitro immunoassay for the qualitative detection of antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi, the causative agent of the Chagas disease) in human serum and plasma.
