Voldemort is the archenemy of Harry Potter, who according to a prophecy has "the power to vanquish the Dark Lord". He attempts to murder the boy, but instead kills his parents, Lily and James Potter, and leaves Harry with a scar on his forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt.
They both came in Voldemort's way and hence got killed in order to protect Harry. It should be noted that even if the prophecy didn't exist he would have wanted them killed anyway since they were prominent members of the Order of the Phoenix. The prophecy only made it a priority and made him want to personally do it.

So in summary, Snape is so angry with Harry in particular because he is petty in a sense; punishing the son for the sins of a father he never knew. He's ferocious with the other houses and is only nice to his Slytherins because he needs to preserve his role as a spy.
