We should always seek help from God as well as going for appropriate medical treatment - not instead of doing so. In Matthew 9, the Pharisees asked Jesus why he spent time with sinners. He replied, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick' (Matthew 9:12). Jesus recognised that sick people need doctors.
46 And he said, To you also woe, doctors of the law, for ye lay upon men burdens heavy to bear, and yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
There are several places in the Bible, where faith alone is accounted for the healing of the people. But there is no place in the Bible that forbids the use of drugs, especially for someone who is ill. Jesus said: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick”—Matthew 9:12.
Luke, author of the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles was also a physician. As he was born in Antioch he was probably Greek. He travelled with the Apostle Paul.
Psalm 105:8
We pray, Lord, that you would be faithful to those whom you have chosen to be nurses, doctors, and all those in healthcare. Lord, would you remember their families, as well, and restore in them a faithfulness in your covenant.
The only surgical operations mentioned in the Bible are circumcision and castration, the former being mandatory – a covenant made with Abraham (Genesis 17:10-11), and the latter being forbidden (Deuteronomy 23:2).
On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: `I desire mercy, not sacrifice. ' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
According to tradition, St. Luke was a physician and possibly a Gentile. He was not one of the original 12 Apostles but may have been one of the 70 disciples appointed by Jesus (Luke 10).
During his earthly life, Jesus was very active in his ministry of healing. He cured the blind, opened the ears of the deaf, and brought the dead back to life. The early Church Fathers gave our Lord the title of “the Divine Physician.” However, Jesus did not cure all disease and sickness once and for all.
Doctor [N] ( Luke 2:46 ; 5:17 ; Acts 5:34 ), a teacher. The Jewish doctors taught and disputed in synagogues, or wherever they could find an audience. Their disciples were allowed to propose to them questions. They assumed the office without any appointment to it.
[1] Honour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the Lord hath created him. [2] For of the most High cometh healing, and he shall receive honour of the king. [3] The skill of the physician shall lift up his head: and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration.
"Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth." The Good News: Whether you need physical, emotional or mental healing, God is here to provide that for you. He will never leave nor forsake you.
Proverbs 17:22 says, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” The Proverbs are wise sayings written by wise men such as King Solomon of Israel, inspired by God Himself.
Doctors are considered to be the personification of God on the earth as they are dedicated, educated and skilled to serve humanity. They give their best efforts to heal people with their skills and intelligence.
The Bible affirms a general connection between sickness and sin—that death, disease, and decay were not part of God's original design for human beings. Beyond that, it is hard to generalize, since some illness does result from sin, some from being sinned against, and most through no fault of the patient.
Key Verse: Jeremiah 8:22, “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people? And because of their unbelief, he couldn't do any mighty miracles among them” (NIV).
Jesus is the “Great Physician” according to Mark 2:17. He came to cure the sick and poor in spirit and to heal our souls and restore our relationship with God.
Jesus Christ experienced hematohidrosis while praying in the garden of Gethsemane before his crucification as mentioned in the Defenders Bible by Physician Luke as “and being in anguish he prayed more earnestly and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”
Who forgives all your sins, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you [lavishly] with lovingkindness and tender mercy; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the [soaring] eagle.
The New Testament mentions Luke briefly a few times, and the Epistle to the Colossians refers to him as a physician (from Greek for 'one who heals'); thus he is thought to have been both a physician and a disciple of Paul.
Examples of biblical medical application are the use of 'balm' to treat sores (Jeremiah), Fig as a cure for a boil (Isaiah), and Mandrake as a fertility remedy enabling Jacob and Leah to have a fifth son (Genesis). Mandrake had around 88 different medicinal uses in the ancient world; some of which continue to this day.
Doctors are referred to about 12 times in the Bible.
Jesus, sensing their lack of faith, says to them, "Ye will surely say unto me this proverb. Physician heal thyself" (New International Version Bible, Luke 4:23).
Being healthy is something we should never take for granted. God has given us many gifts, one of which is good health. Having the right mindset about healing and wholeness is one of our responsibilities as Christians.
Matthew 6:25
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
