Anyone can get sepsis, but young children, older adults (over 65), pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses (like diabetes, cancer, kidney disease) are at higher risk, as are those with recent surgery, serious injuries, or hospital stays, because they're more prone to infections that can trigger this life-threatening condition.

In the U.S., about 1.7 million people get sepsis each year. It's a leading cause of death in hospitals each year in the U.S., claiming about 250,000 lives. Anywhere from one-third to one-half of people who die in the hospital have sepsis.
When germs get into a person's body, they can cause an infection. If that infection doesn't stop, it can cause sepsis. Bacterial infections cause most cases of sepsis. Sepsis can also be a result of other infections, including viral infections, such as influenza.
Certain age groups (such as adults 65 or older and children younger than one), people with chronic conditions (diabetes and lung disease), people with weakened immune systems and more are at higher risk for developing sepsis.

A high fever above 101℉ (38℃) or low temperature below 96.8℉ (36℃) A heart rate above 90 beats per minute. A bacterial infection, fungal infection, or viral infection confirmed through positive blood culture results. Rapid breathing rate higher than 20 breaths per minute.

An infection can also turn into sepsis when a prescribed antibiotic is ineffective. For this reason, be cognizant of your symptoms. If your doctor prescribes an antibiotic (or any medication) but your symptoms don't improve or worsen, notify your doctor and ask about an alternative drug to treat the condition.
The evidence behind the “golden hour” protocol
The main finding was that patients who received antibiotics within the first hour of sepsis recognition had a 79.9% chance of survival. It was also found that with every additional hour, the chance of survival decreased by 7.6%.
To check yourself for sepsis, watch for a combination of symptoms like fast breathing, rapid heart rate, confusion or drowsiness, fever or low temperature, shivering, extreme pain/discomfort, clammy skin, or a rash that doesn't fade, and decreased urination, especially if you have an infection. Sepsis is a medical emergency, so if you suspect it, seek immediate medical help by calling emergency services or going to the hospital.
