Hemingway cats have polydactyly, which is also known as polydactylism or hyperdactyly. It's a congenital physical anomaly which causes cats to have more than the usual number of toes on one or more of their paws.
Polydactyl cats are not inbred. Instead, they have a genetic mutation that has been passed down by one of their parents. If one cat parent has a mutation, at least one of their kittens likely will. Polydactyl is a dominant trait, not an uncommon recessive trait typically explained by inbreeding.

In these situations, the cat actually benefits from the surgery by avoiding overgrown nails and pain.
Most polydactyls get around just fine with multiple toes and don't require special care. However, polydactyls' nails do need regular trimming, as they can become ingrown, causing pain and infection. Have your vet inspect your cat's paws regularly to see whether there are any issues related to his extra digits.
