To make a lizard feel comfortable, you must provide a species-appropriate habitat that meets all its physical and emotional needs, including proper heat, light, humidity, diet, and secure hiding spots. Building trust through patience and gentle, consistent interactions is also key.
Spending Time With Them/Near Them: Just being around can help them get used to you and learn that you are good. To start your friendship with your lizard you'll need them to trust you and know you are safe. Handling: One of the best ways to start your bond and become friends with your lizard is by handling.
“Make the tank similar to what the lizard would experience in its natural habitat. Tropical reptiles should have fake foliage. Use long branches that extend up to the heat source. Fake sand is good for lizards you would find in the desert.”
Start interactions slowly and incrementally.
Allow them to approach and eat at their own pace while you remain still. Once they appear relaxed, slowly and gently stroke their back or chin. Remember to approach them from the side, as coming from above may be perceived as threatening, and pay attention to their response.
It's probably safe to say that these guys aren't as emotional as other animals, such as dogs, cats, and birds but there's really no way to say for sure. That said, reptiles actually can and do get quite attached to their humans.
👀 Anxiety, stress, excitement, fear, frustration, pain and suffering are all emotions that humans can feel on a daily basis, and scientists have repeatedly found that reptiles experience these things as well, according to a 2019 literature review published in the journal Animals.
You will see that they relax their bodies, shut their eyes, and even feel like smiling because of their natural facial structure.
Behaviors such as thermoregulating, hiding, prolonged soaking, reduced appetite, irregular defecation, attitude, regression/increase in tameness, and more can all indicate signs of stress and illness.
You can also create an out-of-enclosure “play area” full of items for your lizard to explore and interact with, including food treats. In some cases, supervised free roaming around your home may be appropriate.
Wrinkled or sunken skin: Skin may look loose, dry, or “accordion-like.” Sunken eyes: Eyes may appear dull or recessed. Lack of urates or dry urates: White chalky waste should be soft—chalky or absent urates suggest dehydration. Lethargy: A normally active lizard or snake that stays hidden or sluggish may be dehydrated.
Although this is usually a gesture of submission if your lizard pet raises its front arm and waves at you, you can interpret this as a friendly gesture, as your beardie is saying 'Hi' to you.
Read their body language, if your Bearded dragon is consistently showing signs of stress when you go to handle them, for example, if they are doing all they can to avoid human contact, have a black beard or dark beard compared to normal or have a consistently raised tail, then you have some work to do.
Many bearded dragons are especially drawn to slotted balls like hamster balls or cat toys. Never let them play with marbles, small rubber balls, or anything else they could choke on. Mirrors. Some bearded dragons really enjoy mirrors, but others get stressed at the sight of their reflection.
But if you are willing to give an iguana the space it needs (it can grow over 6 feet long) and feed it a proper diet, you will find it to be quite friendly as far as lizards go. They enjoy being pet on the head and will let you know if they are uncomfortable or upset by whipping their tail.
Symptoms of stress
Flattened body - A flattened posture, or “pancaking,” when not basking, can mean they feel threatened, especially when accompanied by other behaviors like head bobbing, hissing, or tail whipping.
Lizards do push ups to communicate, not to exercise or regulate temperature. Male lizards do push ups to display dominance, defend territory and attract mates. Female lizards may do push ups to defend territory or reject unwanted advances.
Leviticus 11:29-38 The Message (MSG)
“Among the creatures that crawl on the ground, the following are unclean for you: weasel, rat, all lizards, gecko, monitor lizard, wall lizard, skink, chameleon. Among the crawling creatures, these are unclean for you.
How Do You Know If Your Bearded Dragon Likes You?
A lizard falling on the head is a bad omen which indicates disputes or quarrels. If the lizard falls on the centre of the head it means disease. It is believed to be auspicious if the lizard falls on the right hand side body parts of a man and the left hand side body parts of a women.
Do you know that hot sauce, pepper and cayenne serve as natural deterrents for lizards? You can create an effective lizard repellent by mixing a few tablespoons of your preferred spice with warm water in a spray bottle.
Either way, the amygdala, the fear center of the brain, lights up like a Roman candle and we go into fight or flight mode (or the modern-day version: acting out or shutting down). With kiddos, I sometimes call it “lizard brain” because primitive responses to stress do not involve logic or thinking.
In general, reptiles are perfectly happy living by themselves and don't need the social interaction humans crave. Plus, some species simply prefer the solitary life and shouldn't be put under the stress of having a tank mate.
