The American Staffordshire Terrier is the least likely breed to be adopted. The chances are even worse for Staffordshire Terrier's who are not babies, as they get adopted at a rate of less than 50%. Chihuahuas and pit bull terriers are the two most common breeds available, and also among the least likely to be adopted.
Dogs With Health Problems or Disabilities
Dogs that have been born with or develop a disability or illness that end up in rescue can be extremely difficult to home. Making matters worse, often the kennel environment can exacerbate their problems.
The Pit Bull is the most common dog breed (along with pit bull breed mixes) found in shelters in the United States. They are also the most abused, neglected, and the most euthanized.
This is consistent for all the years and for the different shelters. On the other hand, for dogs, the behavior is different, 44% of the adopted dogs are females and 56% are males. This bias for dogs, is not so much related to the preference of the adopters but rather to the number of males entering the shelters.
