Companies like Nestlé, Mondelēz (Cadbury, Oreo), Mars, Unilever, Kellogg's, PepsiCo, and Yum! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut) have faced significant criticism for sourcing "bad" palm oil linked to rainforest destruction, deforestation, and human rights abuses, despite many having sustainability pledges, often failing to meet them, notes Ethical Consumer, Earth.Org, Greenpeace, The Guardian, Rainforest Action Network. While these major brands use palm oil, campaigners advocate for palm oil-free products or demanding stricter, transparent sourcing from suppliers like Cargill, Wilmar International to hold companies accountable for deforestation.
From farm to finger, Australia's Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants, switched in 2012 from imported sustainable palm oil to 100 per cent Australian-grown high oleic canola oil, to cook their legendary 'finger licking' golden fried chicken and chips.
