Pain has done a lot of horrible things but didn't start out as a horrible person. Pain first comes across as purely evil trying to obtain power. However, his true goal is to obtain peace by any means necessary. Pain lived in a small village that served as a battlefield for great nations.

Pain is nominally a villain in Naruto but he has shown many heroic qualities in the series, leading some to question his allegiances. Pain was one of the main antagonists to the early act of Naruto: Shippuden. The leader of the Akatsuki, his diabolical intentions for the planet make him an easily contemptible villain.

The Naraka Path - the body of a priest. The Naraka Path of Pain (Hell Realm) is tall, bulky and one of the strongest Paths. It wields Nagato's power to control Life and Death, by summoning the King of Hell.

Pain grew up an orphan in Amegakure going by the name Nagato, he was trained by Jiraiya. During there training Pain developed the Rinnegan, an eye technique said to be the most powerful of the eye technique. No other being has had the Rinnegan since the Sage of the six Paths.
Nagato IS Pain. The Six Paths of Pain are remote controlled corpses that Nagato uses to achieve his goals, being stuck to the Demonic Statue. Every ability used by a Path of Pain is one of Nagato's abilities. Nagato is as powerful as all six Paths combined - not as strong, though, due to his frail body.

Minato's son, Naruto Uzumaki is the guy who stood in Pain's path and defeated him during the Pain arc of the Naruto series.
After getting close enough to Nagato, the Deva Path performed Chibaku Tensei, nearly capturing Naruto in a large, floating sphere of earth. This pushed him into the eight-tailed transformation eventually breaking out of the trap. Pain defeated by Naruto.

The Six Paths Of Pain was a jutsu used by Nagato and served as his representation in Akatsuki. It allowed Nagato to control six separated bodies at the same time as if they were his own. Each of these bodies were reanimated corpses which were both kept mobile by, and made use of Nagato's chakra.
They can physically manipulate them, see through them, decide on the use of jutsu and talk through them, making it one of the most unique abilities in the Naruto universe. This technique serves best when used in a combination attack, due to the shared vision between the bodies, surprising presence, and extreme power.
