Reversible: You can change your mind about what you want to do at any time -- even if you are in the middle or have done it before – like sex. Informed: You should know exactly what you are giving consent to. For example, if someone says they are going to use a condom and they don't, they didn't have your consent.
The legal age for consensual sex varies between 16 and 17 years across Australian state and territory jurisdictions (see Table 2). For other sexual activities, the criminal legislation relating to different types of sexual behaviours and interactions varies across Australian jurisdictions.
Legal consent and sexual intercourse defined
While there are “Romeo and Juliet” exceptions in this state that do permit minors to consent to sex with another minor as long as they are close in age to each other, the general rule is that the age of consent for sexual intercourse is 16 years of age.
Keep in mind, any person who is over 18 years of age cannot legally engage in sexual activity with someone under the age of consent—no matter the age difference between the two parties. However, minors over 13 years old can legally consent with another individual if both parties are three years apart at most.
A youth of twelve or thirteen can consent to sexual activity with an individual less than two years older than them. A fourteen- or fifteen-year-old can consent to sexual activity with a partner who is less than five years older than them.
If the sex is consensual (and it must be enthusiastic consent) and the other party is also aged 16 years or over it is not against the law, although there are some exceptions: If the person is very drunk or under the influence of drugs, they may not have the capacity to consent so having sex with them is an offence.

The amendments will also criminalize sex with children under the age of 16 by raising the legal age of consent from 13. Japan's current age of consent has remained unchanged since its enactment in 1907 and is one of the lowest among developed nations.

The dating age rule to determining a socially acceptable age difference in partners goes something like this: half your age plus seven (40 = 20 +7 = 27) to define the minimum age of a partner and your age minus seven times two (40 = 33 * 2 = 60) to define the maximum age of a partner.
