You should avoid eating or drinking at least 6 hours prior to surgery if you will be under general anaesthetic. This doesn't apply for patients under local anaesthetic. Men are advised to clean and shave the pubic area before surgery for hygiene reasons.
Your doctor may ask you to fast for about six hours before the procedure. You may also need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, for at least 24 hours. Partial circumcision may be done under local anesthesia. This means that only the penis and the surrounding areas are numbed.
Pat the cut (incision) dry. You may also take short baths if you wish. Avoid strenuous activities, such as bicycle riding, jogging, weight lifting, or aerobic exercise, for 4 weeks or until your doctor says it is okay. You can return to work and normal activities, including driving, when you are comfortable doing them.
Circumcision care
Always wash your hands before and after touching the circumcision area. Gently wash your baby's penis with plain, warm water after each diaper change, and pat it dry. Do not use soap. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol.
Drink plenty of water – about 6 to 8 glasses per day. If you are not having regular bowel movements, you may need to take a stool softener or a laxative. Speak to a pharmacist about which one to use. If you do not have a bowel movement in the 3 days after surgery, call your doctor.
Urine will not hurt the circumcision and should not cause pain since surgery was not performed on the area where the urine comes out. Urine is sterile and does not cause infections. It is not unusual to see a small amount of bleeding from the incision for the first day or two.
Adult circumcision appears to result in worsened erectile function (p = 0.01), decreased penile sensitivity (p = 0.08), no change in sexual activity (p = 0.22) and improved satisfaction (p = 0.04). Of the men 50% reported benefits and 38% reported harm.
If you get an erection in the healing period just after your procedure it will be painful. It is therefore better if you avoid anything that might lead to an erection. You can put something cold, like an icepack, on your groin to help the erection go away.
This pain often gets better in 3 or 4 days. But it may last for up to 2 weeks. Even though your baby's penis will likely start to feel better after 3 or 4 days, it may look worse. The penis often starts to look like it's getting better after about 7 to 10 days.
Wash the area daily with warm water and pat it dry. Don't use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing. You may cover the area with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, and gauze bandage if it weeps or rubs against clothing. Change the bandage every day.
You will want to avoid putting pressure on the circumcised penis in the first few days. 3) Most babies sleep quite well following the circumcision. The best sleeping position for your baby is on his side, supported by a blanket roll. 4) Healing is promoted by keeping the area clean and dry.
Adult men after the circumcision should bring a pair of tight fitting briefs to wear afterwards which will keep the surgical dressing in place. Continue to wear these at home until the swelling and soreness has eased. Eat and Drinks: If you are having a local anaesthetic, eat and drink as per normal.
Pain control
Most boys will have some pain for 6 to 8 hours. Some may experience pain for up to several days after surgery.
The procedure generally takes about 10 minutes. Circumcision is similar for older boys and adults. However, the procedure might need to be done under general anesthesia, recovery might take longer and the risk of complications might be greater when done later in life.
These findings suggest that it is better to perform circumcision when boys are < 1 year old, when the anesthesia complications are also at a minimum. A longer hospitalization is associated with an increased risk of infection as well as increased costs (24).
Morris' systematic review carried out in Australia [23] on early MC, with a total of 40,473 men, showed that medical circumcision (MC) does not adversely affect sexual function, sensitivity or pleasure.
Call your pediatrician right away if: Your baby does not urinate normally within 6 to 8 hours after the circumcision. There is persistent bleeding. There is redness around the tip of the penis that gets worse after 3 to 5 days.
The area should be kept dry for 48 hours after the operation. After this, take warm baths or showers once or twice a day. Don't use bubble bath or scented soaps, as these may irritate your healing wound. Leave the penis to dry naturally after having a bath or shower.
Circumcised men reported increased penile sensitivity and enhanced ease of reaching orgasm. These data indicate that integration of male circumcision into programs to reduce HIV risk is unlikely to adversely effect male sexual function.
For the glans penis, circumcised men reported decreased sexual pleasure and lower orgasm intensity. They also stated more effort was required to achieve orgasm, and a higher percentage of them experienced unusual sensations (burning, prickling, itching, or tingling and numbness of the glans penis).
The NMC group included 72 patients (29.0%) who were circumcised during the newborn period; the non-NMC group included 176 patients (71.0%) who were circumcised after the newborn period. There was no significant difference in height, weight, and second to fourth digit ratio between both groups (Table 3).
You can shower 24 hours after the operation but do not bath until the wound is healed. Do not soak or scrub the wound whilst showering, gently blot the area to dry it using a soft towel.
You should remain relatively inactive the first 72 hours following surgery. We do encourage walking around for a few minutes every two hours to maintain good circulation, but otherwise, no activity.
