Demodex, a genus of tiny parasitic mites that live in or near hair follicles of mammals, are among the smallest of arthropods with two species Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis typically found on humans.
Lice and other crawling parasites appear as tiny, slow moving crawlers on the hair and scalp. The result of infestation is a papular rash with extreme itching.
Scalp pediculosis
Topical pediculicides remain the main treatment. Permethrin shampoo 1% should be left on the scalp for 10 min and then rinsed. Piperonyl butoxide 15% may also be used as shampoo. Permethrin 5% may also be used, applied to the scalp at night, and removed the next day.
There are two medications that can be used to treat the infection and manage the symptoms. The treatment of choice is diethylcarbamazine (DEC), which kills the microfilariae and adult worms. Albendazole is sometimes used in patients who are not cured with multiple DEC treatments.
