At 4 AM, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) identifies the Lungs as the primary organ active, focusing on cleansing and replenishing, while medically, the body releases hormones like cortisol signaling the liver to produce glucose, potentially causing early waking, and the cardiovascular system also sees increased risk for adverse events. Waking at this time can relate to lung energy (TCM), liver detoxification, or hormonal shifts, affecting respiratory, immune, and metabolic functions.
Your liver operates on a circadian clock. If that rhythm is misaligned – often due to hormone changes in menopause – your liver's nighttime repair processes are disrupted. This can lead to broken sleep, particularly waking around 2 – 4am, which also affects recovery, mental clarity, and inflammation levels.
Dawn phenomenon: Before dawn (even between 2–4 AM), your body releases hormones, growth hormone, cortisol, catecholamines, that signal the liver to release glucose. In people with normal insulin response, this is balanced. But in those with insulin resistance, it can cause spikes and even a subtle morning wakefulness.
For example, if you find yourself waking up between the hours of 3-5am each morning, you may have underlying grief or sadness that is bothering you or you may have a condition in the lung area.
The culprit often responsible for this unwelcome early morning awakening is cortisol, the “stress hormone.”
Medical conditions like insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, anxiety and depression, and indigestion, as well as some medications can cause frequent nighttime wakings. Your bedroom environment—temperature, noise, light, discomfort—and lifestyle factors like alcohol or caffeine consumption can also contribute.
Waking up when 4 am hits might mean that your spirit guides are sending you important messages or guiding you towards your purpose. Spiritually, 4 am is when the physical and spiritual realms are the closest. Write down any messages you receive at 4 am. Harness the calm energy by meditating and centering yourself.
If Heat stays in the Liver and its meridian, the symptoms of the patient will include irritability, red and dry eyes, hypochondriac pain and distension, dream-disturbed sleep, insomnia, headache, dizziness and tinnitus.
Early signs your liver is struggling often include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain/bloating (especially upper right), and itchy skin, with changes in urine/stool color and easy bruising also being key indicators, though sometimes symptoms are absent in early stages. Pay attention to changes like dark urine, pale stools, or jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), as these signal the liver isn't filtering toxins or processing bilirubin properly.
Vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which means it's a nutrient that may help protect cells against damage. Research suggests that in people who have MASLD, vitamin E may boost the liver's natural antioxidants, help reduce liver inflammation and scarring, and help prevent fat buildup.
Improved Sleep Quality: Supplements like melatonin and valerian root help regulate your sleep cycle and promote deeper sleep.
The classics usually associate anger with the Liver, which is why the Liver is the General, but in fact [the emotions of] the Liver include melancholy, hatred, neuroticism, and all the Seven Emotions 七情.
Liver: 1am-3am
Conversely, interrupted or noticeably lighter sleep at certain points during nighttime sleep, or fully waking up at 3, could signal another organ (in this case the liver), could be under pressure. As you can see from this schedule, 1-3am is 'liver time'.
The 4 am wake up meaning often includes a heightened state of awareness and productivity. It's a time when the world is quiet, allowing for uninterrupted thought and activity. Getting up at 4am benefits your personal and professional life by giving you a head start and setting a positive tone for the day.
For example, many people tend to wake up between 3-5 am, during the Lung time. The emotion associated with the Lungs is grief or worry, so we hear a lot of patients say they wake up during that time of the night worrying, or feeling sad.
Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night, sleeping as much as possible before midnight. Your body repairs itself best between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. If you have trouble relaxing or falling asleep: Go to bed only when you feel sleepy.
Signs Your Circadian Rhythm May Be Out of Sync
In humans melatonin has diurnal variations. The hormone secretion increases soon after the onset of darkness, peaks in the middle of the night, between 2 and 4 a.m., and gradually falls during the second half of the night (figure 3).
Reasons for Waking Up Too Early: There can be various reasons for waking up at 4:00 am, and they may include factors such as insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, hormonal changes, medications, exposure to light, lifestyle choices, pain, low blood sugar, sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disorders.
Biblical watch divisions recognized the morning watch (approximately 2 AM – 6 AM) as a distinct period with unique spiritual significance. The 4 AM hour falls within this morning watch period that represents: Transition from night warfare to morning preparation for daily spiritual assignments.
