Scabies mites are repelled or killed by essential oils like Tea Tree Oil, Clove Oil, Neem Oil, Palmarosa, Eucalyptus, and Cinnamon, which show promise in lab studies due to compounds like eugenol (in clove oil) or terpinen-4-ol (in tea tree oil) disrupting the mites, but these natural remedies are supplementary and need medical guidance for complete eradication, as they often don't kill eggs as effectively as prescribed treatments.
Essential oils, especially tea tree, clove, palmarosa, and eucalyptus oils, are potential complementary or alternative products to treat S. scabiei infections in humans or animals, as well as to control the mites in the environment.
Carvacrol, eugenol, and geraniol have been found to have significant ovicidal activity against S. scabiei with low half-maximal effective concentrations (EC50) up to 0.5% [16]. Additionally, Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Ocimum sanctum were the most active against S. scabiei among the 31 essential oils tested [8].
The 2 most common treatments for scabies are permethrin cream and malathion lotion. Both medications contain insecticides that kill the scabies mite. Permethrin cream is usually recommended as the first treatment. Malathion lotion is used if permethrin isn't effective.
Scabies causes itchy skin and threadlike tracks on your skin. The itching is usually worse at night or after a hot bath or shower.
Scabies Collection Instructions:
Perform scrapings on skin lesions in multiple sites; burrows or erythematous papules are ideal. Place a small amount of mineral oil on the site to aid in removal of mites.
In the laboratory experiments more than 80% of mites were killed after immersion in 0.2% and 0.4% solutions of eucalyptus oil for 30 and 60 minutes (Fig. 1).
Rosemary Oil
A study conducted at Northeast Forestry University in China found that, when combined, rosemary and clove possess significant antimicrobial activity, which could help treat scabies symptoms.
For instance, some essential oils, such as oregano oil, lavender, tea tree oil and neem oil, have been tested against Sarcoptes scabiei and Psoroptes spp. and seem to have strong acaricidal efficacy in vitro [13–20].
Scabies spread by prolonged skin-to-skin contact or by sharing items of clothing, bedding, towels, or linen with someone with scabies. Q Can they live in my clothes? only live there for 3 days but if someone wears your clothes, the mites can spread to them from your clothes.
It's important to avoid close contact with other people for the first 24 hours. Children under 5 years old can go back to nursery or pre-school 24 hours after the first treatment. Although the treatment kills the scabies mites quickly, the itching can carry on for a few weeks.
Treatment
High-Temperature Washing (60°C or above) Washing your sheets, pillowcases, and mattress protectors in water that's at least 60°C is one of the most effective ways to kill dust mites instantly. This study found 60°C washing killed 100% of mites, while 40°C failed.
How can you care for yourself at home?
Tea tree oil is a fantastic skincare ingredient that's generally considered safe for your face, but with some ground rules. Because it's so strong, you should never put it directly on your face by itself. You should only use it once it's been diluted with water or some kind of carrier oil.
Application of Neem Oil
Scabicides are products used to treat scabies because they kill mites and their eggs.
Ivermectin is the most common medication to treat scabies. This is an antiparasitic pill given in a single dose, followed by a second dose one to two weeks later.
Scabies happens on the body but usually not on the head or neck area. Itching with scabies is severe and often worse at night. If you think you or your child might have lice, look at the scalp closely.
Combine Clove, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint or Rosemary oil with water in a spray bottle and spray your bed, linens, and other furniture lightly with a fine mist. Once this mixture air dries, the scent should repel dust mites.
If resistant scabies is suspected after re-treatment consider oral ivermectin in combination with a topical treatment, referral, or discussion with a dermatologist to determine subsequent treatment options.
Dilute clove oil in a carrier oil and apply it to the skin. Why it works: Clove oil contains eugenol, a compound with numbing properties that can alleviate itching associated with scabies.
Scabies is caused by a tiny, eight-legged mite. The female mite burrows just under the skin and makes a tunnel where it lays eggs. The eggs hatch, and the mite larvae travel to the surface of the skin, where they mature. These mites can then spread to other areas of the skin or to the skin of other people.
