That white, stringy stuff is usually granulation tissue, a normal and healthy part of the healing process where your body forms new, protective tissue (blood vessels, collagen, white blood cells) to fill the tooth socket after an extraction, often appearing a few days after the procedure and signaling good recovery. If it's not accompanied by severe pain, bad odor, or significant swelling, it's generally fine; contact your dentist if you suspect a dry socket (severe pain) or infection.

Healthy granulation tissue is pink or red and is a good indicator of healing. Unhealthy granulation is dark, dusky red, bleeds easily, and may indicate the presence of wound infection. Excess granulation or "proud flesh" is called hypergranulation. The wound tissue will manifest above the normal wound bed surface.
In the initial days post-surgery, you may notice your gum graft appearing white or gray. This is a result of what's known as tissue sloughing, an expected part of the healing process for soft tissue. This color change is due to a decrease in tissue oxygenation and initial lack of blood supply to the area.
Saline soaks help heal the granulation tissue that sometimes forms around your child's g-tube stoma. The extra salty water pulls moisture away from the stoma. Replace the gauze pad(s) every 20–40 minutes. When the gauze pads have little or no blood on them, they are no longer necessary. The amount of bleeding will vary from person to person. Most of your bleeding will slow within 3–4 hours, but a small amount of bleeding is common for up to 24 hours.
Your body will let you know right away if something's wrong and the extraction site isn't healing. If you experience severe pain, swelling, and bleeding that don't go away with the tips the dentist prescribed, then you need to reach out to your dentist right away.

If you suspect mouth larva, watch for these signs: Visible maggots in the mouth (tiny, white, worm-like creatures). Pain and swelling in gums, tongue, or cheeks. Bad breath (halitosis) that doesn't go away with brushing.
The white, stringy substance in your mouth is a biofilm, which contains bacteria. However, it's not harmful because these bacteria already exist in your mouth naturally. Even if you swallowed it, it wouldn't be dangerous because your stomach acid would break it down completely.
Key Points. A mouth sore that lasts more than 10 days should be evaluated by a doctor or dentist. Isolated mouth sores in people with no other symptoms or risk factors for a systemic illness are usually caused by a viral infection or recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
