In the third stage of labor, the placenta is delivered. The placenta grows in your uterus and supplies your baby with food and oxygen through the umbilical cord. This stage is the shortest and usually doesn't take more than 20 minutes.
It all happened when Mary Gorgens got up to go to the bathroom, two days before her baby was due, where she was surprised to feel her son's head crowning. She quickly woke up her husband, but when he ran to the bathroom himself, thinking he had time, it was too late: She had already delivered in 120 seconds!
Precipitous labor (or rapid labor) describes labor that's quick and short. If you have a precipitous labor, your baby is born within three hours of regular contractions starting. Contractions are when your uterine muscles tighten and relax to help push your baby out.
Usually, labor ranges from 6 to 18 hours from the very early stage until birth. If your labor is faster than the normal range, it's called precipitous labor. Most moms hope for a quick and easy labor, but precipitous labor may be too fast and can lead to health concerns for both you and your baby.
The Second Stage of Labor (Delivery)
The second stage of labor begins when your cervix is fully dilated at 10 centimeters. This stage continues until your baby passes through the birth canal, vagina, and is born. This stage may last 2 hours or longer.
When your baby is ready to begin the journey through the birth canal, your cervix dilates from fully closed to 10 centimeters. This process can take hours, days, or even weeks. But once you hit active labor – about 6 cm dilated – it's usually just a matter of hours before you reach full dilation.
For first-time moms, it can last from 12 to 19 hours. It may be shorter (about 14 hours) for moms who've already had children. It's when contractions become strong and regular enough to cause your cervix to dilate (open) and thin out (efface).
For first-time mothers the average length of pushing is one-to-two hours. In some instances, pushing can last longer than two hours if mother and baby are tolerating it. Normally, the baby is born with his face looking toward mother's back (referred to as an anterior position).
Will a fast labour harm my baby? Most babies who are born quickly are fine and don't experience any problems as a result of a speedy arrival . Sometimes, however, the intensity of your contractions during a fast labour can cause complications for your baby.
If your water (aka “amniotic sac,” “bag of waters” or “membranes”) hasn't broken on its own when you arrive at the hospital, and you're five or more centimeters dilated, your OB might recommend bursting the bag by hand—especially if your cervix seems to be making slow (or no) progress.
How long it lasts: Active labor often lasts 4 to 8 hours or more. On average, your cervix will dilate at approximately 1 cm an hour. What you can do: Look to your labor partner and health care team for encouragement and support.
On average for your first baby, the: first stage of labour can last from 10 to 14 hours. second stage of labour can take one to two hours to push your baby out. third stage can last five to 45 minutes.
An overwhelming urge to push (some women don't, however) "The ring of fire," a burning, stinging sensation as your baby's head crowns and your vagina stretches for your baby to emerge. The burning doesn't last long – soon there's a feeling of numbness instead as the vaginal tissue stretches thin, blocking the nerves.
No one knows for sure what makes some women experience a very fast labor, while others labor for hours or even days. Some suggest that women who have a precipitous labor may have a combination of low resistance of the birth canal (due to low muscle tone of the vagina and pelvic floor) and unusually strong (efficient!)
Precipitous labor, also called rapid labor, is when you're only in labor a few hours before you give birth. Rapid labor can end 3-5 hours after regular contractions start. Studies estimate that nearly 1-3 out of every 100 expecting women in the U.S. experience precipitous labor.
Common options for coping with pain include massage, water therapy, and breathing exercises. Music and calming smells (aromatherapy) can help relax you. Consider taking short walks and changing positions during labor—moving around can reduce pain.
Until recently, women have been asked to start pushing as soon as the cervix has dilated to 10 centimeters, but as long as you do not have a fever and your baby's heart rate is normal, there are many benefits to waiting to push until you feel the need to push.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists considers 3 hours or more (especially with a first time mom and/or those with epidurals) to be perfectly normal.
The most common description of the level of pain experienced was extreme menstrual cramps (45 percent), while 16 percent said it was like bad back pain and 15 percent compared it to a broken bone.
Underlying emotional and/or psychological stress can cause labor to stall or slow down. Known as "emotional dystocia" this can be anything from an extreme fear of pain to trauma, unease, and/or not feeling safe. The size of the baby and/or of your birthing canal.
Hospitals and doctors have their own individual policies for epidurals. In most cases, however, an epidural will not be given until the mother is at least 3-4 centimeters dilated. Once the mother is fully dilated most doctors and hospitals will consider it too late for an epidural to be given.
If your baby is not born after approximately 20 hours of regular contractions, you are likely to be in prolonged labor. Some health experts may say it occurs after 18 to 24 hours. If you are carrying twins or more, prolonged labor is labor that lasts more than 16 hours.
Try being upright
One of your biggest allies is gravity. When you are upright—standing, sitting or kneeling—the weight of your baby presses on the cervix, encouraging it to open. An upright position may also help get your baby into the best position for birth.
95% of women took less than 2 hours to dilate one centimetre during active labour. Most hospitals and health care providers have now updated guidelines to acknowledge these new findings.
Stage 2: Pushing and Birth
The second stage of labor begins once you are fully dilated to 10 cm. Your provider will let you know that it is time to start pushing your baby out. This stage can be as short as 20 minutes or as long as a few hours.
