Most notably, Ephesians 5:18 prohibits intoxication, contrasting it with being controlled by the Holy Spirit: “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit” (ESV). In other words, Scripture warns us that excessive drinking can cause us to lose control of our minds and bodies.
Christians are allowed by God to drink alcohol, but we are forbidden to get drunk. “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18; also see Proverbs 20:1, 23:20, Isaiah 5:22). This is a command from the Spirit-inspired apostle.
Although the Bible never says that drinking alcohol itself is sinful, it does say many times that drunkenness is a sin. God says, "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:6). In fact, there are many verses in the Bible that speak out against drunkenness.
“I love you and I offer you free forgiveness.” One of the sweetest passages in the Bible is John 3:16: “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus loves everyone, even the alcoholic who has turned away from Him, and Jesus showed ...
In Mark 3:29 Jesus says that “whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” Matthew's account adds that even blasphemy against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but not blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31–32).
The Bible is unequivocal about the path to salvation: acknowledging our sins, repenting, and accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior. Addiction does not nullify this. If you genuinely desire recovery and seek God's help, the path to salvation remains open.
Several passages in God's Word openly condemn drunkenness
In other words, Scripture warns us that excessive drinking can cause us to lose control of our minds and bodies. That is clearly sinful.
God Warns Against Addictive Behavior
“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18) “Envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:21)o.
To take more meat or drink than is necessary belongs to the vice of gluttony, which is not always a mortal sin: but knowingly to take too much drink to the point of being drunk, is a mortal sin.
The abstentionist position is held by many Baptists, Methodists, Nazarenes, Pentecostals, and other evangelical Protestant groups including the Salvation Army.
The Bible says that alcohol is a gift from God. Deut 14:26 implies that it is a good thing to spend money on and drink wine. Psalm 4:7 compares joy in the Lord to the abundance of wine.
To constantly be thinking about god is the biggest blessing. I say even while intoxicated, if a person is thinking about god, then it means that the lord is also thinking about you. As long as you're sincere and pray with a pure heart.
Jesus Christ called the Holy Spirit "Spirit of Truth" (John 14:17; 15:26; John 16:13) and warned us, "All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven unto men" (Matthew 12:31).
Although drinking in moderation is not condemned in Scripture, losing self-control is, and there are many warnings about alcohol's destructive nature (Proverbs 20:1; 31:4). Getting drunk leads to a loss of self-control, being filled with the Spirit leads to more self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).
In Christianity, addiction is often seen as a form of idolatry, where the substance or behavior becomes a false god that the person worships instead of their actual God. It's not explicitly labeled as a sin, but it's considered a deviation from the path of righteousness.
Noah was a good man and alcohol made him look like a fool! Lot (Genesis 19:33-38) would escape for his life with his two daughters from Sodom. They got him to drinking because he was probably a social drinker. He became so drunk on two different occasions that his wicked daughters committed incest with him.
1 Thessalonians 5:5-8
Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
Jeremiah 25:27 New International Version (NIV)
“Then tell them, 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.
It doesn't say we lose salvation, but it warns that those who live in unrepentant drunkenness will not inherit the Kingdom of God. So while alcohol itself isn't the issue, letting it master us or cloud our walk with God definitely is (1 Corinthians 6:12).
First of all, underage drinking is illegal and, therefore, wrong. The Bible says Christians are to obey the law (Romans 13:1). Getting drunk is also prohibited. Ephesians 5:18 says, “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.”
The Quran plainly states in this ayah that alcohol or wine (khamr) consumption is a major sin – اِثْمٌ كَبِیْرٌ – and according to Quran and sunnah, major sins are explicitly prohibited. Moreover, it should be noted here that the term ithm – إِثْمٌ involves anything that might lead to enact a sin (Shafi).
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous 1 will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: xneither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 2 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Spirits achieve a much higher alcohol content than beer and wine—which contain alcohol created naturally through fermentation—because distillation concentrates the ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, in them. The word spirits still preserves this origin story—alcohol as the distilled essence, or spirit, of the drink.
Scripture never says that it's sinful for people to get drunk. There are prohibitions against certain individuals drinking - but it's not a general command.
With this declaration, Alma identified for Corianton the three most abominable sins in the sight of God: (1) denying the Holy Ghost, (2) shedding innocent blood, and (3) committing sexual sin. Adultery was third to murder and the sin against the Holy Ghost as abominable sins.
