The five Regiments of Foot Guards are the Grenadier Guards, the Coldstream Guards, the Scots Guards, the Irish Guards and the Welsh Guards.
It can be distinguished on parade by red plumes on the right of the bearskins, the Garter star on the collar, and buttons spaced in twos as the second regiment of foot guards, a position they have never accepted as they are older than the Grenadier Guards, hence the motto Nulli Secundus or Second to None.
Telling the regiments apart
From a distance they appear identical, but there are ways to distinguish between the regiments: The colour of the plume, and which side of the bearskin it is worn on. The spacing of the tunic buttons. The badge worn on the collar.
With Monck's death in 1670 it was again renamed 'The Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards' after the location in Scotland from which it marched to help restore the monarchy in 1660. Its name was again changed to the 'Coldstream Guards' in 1855 and this is still its present title.
