Florida avocados are the larger, smooth-skinned choices. California avocados sold in supermarkets are the Hass variety, and are smaller and have a pebbly skin that turns from green to a purplish-black when ripe. "A flowers" are female (receptive to pollen) in the morning and male (shedding pollen) in the afternoon. "B flowers" are male (shedding pollen) in the morning and female (receptive to pollen) in the afternoon. For the most part, avocado cultivars have only A flowers or only B flowers.

Maluma is more upright than Hass, but is smaller and less vigorous than Hass, and can relatively easily be trained to a central leader if this is done early. If a central leader system is used, the side branches are horizontal, somewhat drooping, with shorter internodes than Hass.
A Shepard avocado has a bright yellow inside and holds its colour and flavour very well even after being cut. It has a glossy green skin and the flesh inside is quite firm. The Shepard avocado has occasionally been described as a Dwarf variety.
Because Fuerte avocados have a higher water content than their Hass cousins, they also have lower levels of fat. It's the fat in Hass avocados that offer their richer flavor, making them more adaptable and suitable in recipes across the board.
When it comes to nutritional content, Hass avocados are higher in fat than other varieties, which gives them a richer taste and smoother, creamier texture. 80% of avocados consumed in the world are Hass avocados, meaning all other varieties make up only a small proportion of the remaining 20%.
Compared to Hass trees, GEM trees have more dense foliage, are less alternate bearing, and the fruit tend to be larger. The GEM tree tends to hold its fruit more internally than Hass; thus, the GEM fruit are less susceptible to sunburn.
Avocados need nitrogen, first and foremost, and a little zinc. You can use a citrus tree fertilizer as an avocado fertilizer or go organic and use compost, coffee, fish emulsion, etc. Avocados are hardy in USDA zones 9b to 11 and in those regions soil is generally sufficiently nutrient rich to support an avocado.
