Field marshal (India) Field Marshal (Hindi: फ़ील्ड मार्शल, romanized: pheeld maarshal) is a five–star officer rank and the highest attainable in the Indian Army. Created in 1973, it exists as an ceremonial recognition, awarded exclusively to officers deemed to have rendered exceptional service during wartime.
A special rank called General of the Armies of the United States, which ranks above the second incarnation of General of the Army, exists but has been conferred only three times — to World War I's John J. Pershing in 1919, posthumously to George Washington in 1976, and posthumously to Ulysses S. Grant in 2024.

The highest operational rank is General, which is held exclusively by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).

General of the Armies of the United States, more commonly referred to as General of the Armies, is the highest military rank in the United States.
In many countries, the rank of marshal, cf. field marshal, is the highest army rank, outranking other general officers. The equivalent navy rank is often admiral of the fleet or grand admiral. Marshals are typically, but not exclusively, appointed only in wartime.

The Indian Army Rank Structure consists of 17 ranks. The ranks can be broadly classified into 3 categories: Commissioned Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks as already stated above.
General, lieutenant general, and major general are the first, second, and third grades of general officers in many armies. The United States Army, Air Force, and Marines have a fourth general officer grade, brigadier general (brigadier in the British Army).
