An example of a bonding agent is epoxy, used to create strong bonds between concrete, metal, or other materials, but other common examples include latex emulsions (like PVA or SBR) for construction, or even specialized dental adhesives that bond composite to teeth, acting as a glue to join surfaces.
Bonding agents are used to ensure proper adhesion between layers of materials, enhancing the structural integrity and durability of the final product. They are essential in applications where new materials need to be securely attached to existing surfaces.
Bonding Agents
Contractors PVA
Specifically designed for the trade for use as a primer and sealer for porous substrates. It is a plaster bonding agent, priming a wide range of substrates, helping to regulate surface porosity and prevent uneven drying which can lead to cracking.

Weld-Crete® Concrete Bonding Agent
For exterior and interior use, will bond new concrete, Portland cement plaster and cementitious mixes to structurally sound concrete floors, walls, columns, beams, steps and ramps. Weld-Crete®can be "painted on" in a single application 1 hour to 10 days prior to concrete placement.
Primer is not the same as primer and is not the same as the term bonding agent, although they are often used synonymously. Primers and undercoats, however, fulfil different tasks in coating and bonding processes. They are often different in terms of material and not comparable in application.
Acrylic – Acrylic-based sealers are a cost-effective solution for adding a protective barrier to your concrete surfaces. Acrylic sealers are easy to apply, making them a great choice for DIYers, and their quicker dry time is perfect for projects on a tight timeline.
PVA glue is not suitable for outdoor, wet, or high-heat applications, bonding non-porous surfaces like some plastics and metals, or situations requiring instant grab; it also performs poorly in freezing conditions and needs proper clamping for full strength, taking about 24 hours to cure. It's best for indoor woodworking, paper, and porous materials.
Plasterer's Grit Plaster Bonding Agent. Bostik Plasterer's Grit is specially designed for the plastering professional. The pregrit product primes and stabilises most interior surfaces, providing an excellent key for skim coats.
There are four major types of chemical bonds in chemistry, which includes; Ionic bond, Covalent bond, Metallic bond, and Hydrogen bond.
Structural bonding agent between old and new concrete
Epoxy based, two component structural bonding agent. Sika® Hibond compiles with ASTM 881 – 87 Type II Grade 2 Class B and C. Once the two components of the material is mixed the material must be used within approx 4 hours.
The strongest glues tend to be resins, which we often form by mixing two different components together. This causes an exothermic chemical reaction, creating strong molecular bonds that will happily stick almost anything together. It's unsurprising, then, that the world's strongest glue is an epoxy resin.
A bonding agent (bonding adhesive) needs to be painted onto the existing concrete first to ensure that the fresh concrete will successfully adhere. This is also true of floor repairs, if concrete is used to fill gaps caused by damage. The new won't adhere to the old without the help of a bonding adhesive.
The appropriate bonding agent depends on your specific dental needs, the procedure being performed, and your dentist's recommendations. Factors such as the location of the restoration and personal health conditions are important when selecting the right bonding material.
The most effective way to ensure that the bonding agent gets into the existing concrete is to apply it directly using a brush or rag. It can be sprayed if you happen to have a sprayer. Although the directions say that you can use it as part of the mix water, direct application works better.
Gorilla Wood Glue is a non-toxic water based, solvent free polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glue that requires only 20-30mins clamp time and is fully cured in 24 hours. It is suitable for use indoors and outdoors and can be used on hardwoods, softwoods and wood composites. This glue dries with a natural finish.
PVA/PVOH films like detergent pods and sheets are especially prone to causing pollution because they are discharged directly into your home's wastewater system. From there, polluted water is sent back into the ground through your septic, cesspool, or sewer system (and in this case, usually to a sewage treatment plant).
Without PVA, plaster may not bond properly, leading to cracking, uneven drying, or poor adhesion. It could also result in a weaker finish or cause the plaster to peel away over time.
Mistake #2: Sealing before Full Cure
Sealing before your patio is fully cured is a recipe for disaster. Concrete needs time to release moisture and fully harden. Rush this process, and you're looking at a weakened surface prone to damage and an ineffective seal.
Steps:
If you are about to tackle a challenging surface, a bonding primer is your best choice. Though we don't recommend using bonding primer over peeling paint, you can cover almost any area where a low surface temperature may be a bad fit for other primers.
Tile adhesive acts as a bonding agent between the tile and the substrate, ensuring that the tiles stay in place and do not shift or crack over time. It eliminates the need for traditional methods like using mortar cement, reducing the installation time and effort.
