A Jack or Knave, in some games referred to as a bower, is a playing card which, in traditional French and English decks, pictures a man in the traditional or historic aristocratic or courtier dress, generally associated with Europe of the 16th or 17th century.
Originally this was the name applied to the knave of trump in the old game of all fours, which had already achieved wide popularity in preference to the archaic-sounding knave in other games.
Jacks aren't princes, as many people assume. Instead, the figures represent knights, military heroes and even brave faces from mythology. For example, two of the designated jacks from the 16th-century French decks were Lancelot, from King Arthur's court and Hector, famed mythological hero of Troy.
All cards are at face value, except for the King, Queen and Jack which count as 10. An Ace will have a value of 11 unless that would give a player or the dealer a score in excess of 21; in which case, it has a value of 1. The dealer starts the game.
