It turns out that baking soda catalyzes some form of reaction inside the rat's stomach. Baking soda combines with the stomach acids to produce carbon dioxide gas which rats are unable to tolerate. In turn, it builds up within their system and eventually causes internal blockage and rupture.
It is non-toxic, and is typically used as a leavening agent, which means it is used to help baked goods rise. Since rats and mice won't eat baking soda on its own, we need to mix it with other ingredients that are appealing to them.
All you need to do is mix 2 – 2 and a half cups of ammonia, 100 – 200 mL of water and a 2-3 spoonful of detergent in a bowl. Then, put it to places where rats are usually seen. The smell of ammonia is very pungent that it instantly kills rats.
Baking Soda
Household kitchen ingredients are great for removing such a foul scent. Mixing baking soda with water and placing the solution into a spray bottle that you can spray the area where the dead rodent was found is your best bet.
Baking soda is a common household product that is poisonous to mice. Simply sprinkle the product in areas where the intruder likes to go. You could mix the baking soda in with mouse bait: cereal, dried fruit, peanut butter, etc.
Firstly, a rat would have to ingest two to three grams of baking soda to die. The rat would also have to consume it in one go, which is unlikely as baking soda is not one of the rat's favorite foods and two to three grams is a lot to eat all at once.
Combine 1 cup of flour or cornmeal with 1 cup of sugar or powdered chocolate mix. Add 1 cup of baking soda and blend the mixture very well. The sugar or chocolate will attract the rats, and the baking soda will soon kill them after they've consumed it. Fill some jar lids about half full with the rat bait.
Mice or rats die in 24 to 36 hours when exposed to baking soda due to its strong alkalinity, which is well beyond the levels they can handle. Baking soda is natural and mice or rats cannot discriminate between it and food. It does not have to mix with poison or other substances for mice or rats to ingest it.
Unlike some other rat poisons, which require multiple days of feeding by an animal, bromadiolone can be lethal from one day's feeding. Bromadiolone was first registered in the United States in 1980. It is an odorless powder that is white to yellow in color.
Peppermint oil is an effective method for keeping mice and rats away. These rodents cannot stand this oil's robust and minty smell, so a few drops around your home can go a long way in keeping them away.

When dealing with a rat infestation, it is advisable to use appropriate rat control methods, such as traps or professional pest control services, for effective and humane management. Baking powder won't kill rats by itself; you'll need to combine it with other ingredients to create a deadly poison.
While rats might leave a nest temporarily if disturbed, they will likely only nest somewhere else close by, no doubt creating multiple nests that exacerbate the issue. On top of that, there's also a risk that they will return to the same space if you haven't properly dealt with the nest.
Electronic rat traps are considered the most modern and effective traps for rodents. These traps lure rodents with food and baits them onto a metal plate inside that immediately electrocutes them. It is the most humane approach in comparison to snap traps and poisonous traps – the rat's death is nearly instant.
Eucalyptus or Peppermint oil can repel rats because they hate the smell. Another way to use a rat's sense of smell against them is to plant peppermint and catnip in strategic places. Diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to humans, but it can dry out rats until they die.
There is no single food that will kill rats instantly. But there are a few foods that can become fatal to them when eaten in large quantities. These include chocolate, avocados, and peanuts. When you want to kill a rat, it is best to trap it and then drown or hit it on the head with a heavy object.
Baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate, a fine white powder that has many uses. You may wonder about bicarbonate of soda vs. baking soda, but they are simply alternate terms for the same ingredient. If your recipe calls for bicarbonate of soda, it is simply referring to baking soda.
Advantages. It's cost-effective: Using salt to deter rats is one of the most cost-effective methods of keeping these rodents at bay. Salt is readily available in most homes and hence doesn't require you to purchase additional products.
Corn gluten: This type of rodent bait is usually found in disc and pellet forms. Because these discs and pellets look very similar to more toxic baits, do not assume that all brown discs or pellets are corn gluten. This rodenticide causes dehydration and obstruction of the GI tract in rats and mice.
Poison bait by design is food to the rats. Putting out poison attracts rats, just as putting out a quail block attracts quail. Outside bait stations provide an ideal harborage for rats to hide in, safe from predators. Rats will even build nests inside of a bait station.
