When elves die, their spirits travel to the Halls, where they rest for a time as disembodied shades. Most of them are then returned to corporeal form and rejoin all the other elves living in Valinor.
Elves are naturally immortal; like the Ainur, they are bound to Arda until its End. Elves are immune to all diseases, and they can recover from wounds which would normally kill a mortal Man. Nonetheless, Elves can be physically slain or die of grief and weariness.
The elvish afterlife is actually described very clearly in Tolkien's essay “Laws and Customs Among the Eldar.” Here I'll just give the short version: When an elf dies, their spirit (fea) is separated from their body (hroa). Their fea is summoned to the Halls of Mandos.
Where do elves go to heaven? The Elves are destined to remain a part of the physical universe until its end; hence they cannot pass to heaven at least until Time and Space end. For this reason the Elves fear that they may cease to exist when Time finishes its full tale.
They bury them, usually in Elvish lands themselves. The great Fingolfin was buried on top of a mountain in Echoriath. The princess Finduilas was buried in a tomb called the Haudh-en-Elleth. During the Wars with Morgoth, the Elves and Men buried their death in the hill called the Haudh-en-Nirnaeth.
The official Elf on the Shelf website details the three rules to follow. The first and most important rule is that you must NOT touch your Elf. If you do, they will lose all their magic - and nobody wants that to happen. When scout elves lose their magic, they can't go about their Christmas duties.
Santa advises that no family member touch their Elf on the Shelf, but he does describe a few rare instances when an adult may use tongs or potholders to help an elf in an urgent situation. Parents: read on to learn about special, few and far between cases where emergency help will be required.
Average Elven Lifespan
Elves have the ability to live forever thanks to their immortality. Elves like Elrond, who was over 6000 years old in The Lord of the Rings, are not hard to come by.
The elves are generally said to live for hundreds, or even thousands, of years, despite the fact that in some cases they appear eternally youthful as children.
Eldamar is "Elvenhome", the "coastal region of Aman, settled by the Elves", wrote Tolkien. Eldamar was the true Eldarin name of Aman. In The Hobbit it is referred to as "Faerie". The land was well-wooded, as Finrod "walk[ed] with his father under the trees in Eldamar" and the Teleri had timber to build their ships.
From a scientific viewpoint, elves are not considered objectively real. However, elves have in many times and places been believed to be real beings.
Elf Immortality & The Rings
The elves, or the Eldar, are immortal in the sense that they cannot die from illness or old age, however they can be slain. If they do die, they are summoned to the Halls of Mandos on Valinor, where they may eventually be returned to a physical form, although only in Valinor.
Write a note to your elf or Santa apologizing for touching your elf. This is the most effective way to help your Scout Elf get back in action quick! Sprinkle a little cinnamon next to your Scout Elf.
The bodies of Elves live indefinitely (they do not age) in Middle-Earth, but they can be killed, or so badly wounded that their spirits forsake their bodies. They can also weary of life itself, in time, at which point they can only find peace if they leave and go to the Undying Lands.
Unlike Men and Dwarves, Elves are immortal. They feature in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Their history is described in detail in The Silmarillion.
As the story goes, elves arrive around Thanksgiving and keep watch of children up until Christmas Eve. Every night during this time, elves fly to the North Pole to report to the big guy, ya know, Santa, about the kids' naughty or niceness, then return to a new spot each morning.

An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old. Elves take their time doing things because of their long life span. So to them 100 years feels like what 20 years feels like to a Human.
The bride's mother gives the groom a jewel to wear. Elves view the sexual act as special and intimate, for it leads to the birth of children. Elves cannot be forced to have sex; before that they will lose the will to endure and go to Mandos. Elves have few children, and there are long intervals between each child.
Elves need to wait until everyone is asleep before they can move around. If there was too much activity around the house last night, perhaps your elf only had time to get to the North Pole and back, but not enough time to find a new position. Make sure you get to bed early tonight to help them out!
They have a favorite spot in your home. When your Scout Elf flies back from the North Pole and lands in the same spot, chances are it's their favorite place to sit in your home. Just like you have a favorite spot on the couch, your elf has favorite spots, too! The spot has a great vantage point.

One popular way to bid farewell is to have your elf leave a special, personal message for your kid, whether it's a typewritten note or a message spelled out in candy or plastic letters on the fridge or on snow-painted window or mirror.
