At the end of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, Jocasta commits suicide by hanging herself in despair after discovering she has unwittingly married her own son, Oedipus, and borne him children, fulfilling the horrific prophecy. Upon discovering her body, Oedipus blinds himself in horror, and she is found hanging in their bedroom, a tragic end to her attempts to escape fate.
At the climax of the play, Jocasta is so overwhelmed by the horror of having had sex with her own son that she commits suicide, hanging herself over their marriage bed. This is a Sophoclean innovation; in earlier versions of the myth she either stabs herself to death or survives the shock and lives on.
Everything is at last revealed, and Oedipus curses himself and fate before leaving the stage. The chorus laments how even a great man can be felled by fate, and following this, a servant exits the palace to speak of what has happened inside. Jocasta has hanged herself in her bedchamber.

The dramatic irony is that we know that Oedipus should be listening to Tiresias because he's telling the truth, but Oedipus refuses to acknowledge the claim. Also ironically, although Tiresias is physically blind, Oedipus is the one who can't see the situation he's in.
In both traditions, Oedipus blinds himself by gouging out his eyes, sometimes with Jocasta's brooches. Sophocles has Oedipus go into exile with his daughter Antigone, but Euripides and Statius have him residing within Thebes' walls during the war between Eteocles and Polynices.
In the case of Oedipus, his tragic flaw is hubris, or excessive pride. In thinking that he could outrun his own fate, he inevitably causes it to happen. In ancient Greek culture one would have to suffer from extreme pride to think they could defy the will of the gods.
Her life symbolizes the tragic consequences of fate and the inescapable nature of prophesied destiny. Her life and death exemplify the themes of ignorance, tragedy, and the limits of human understanding.
Jocasta is Ellen's sister and has loved Murtagh from afar for decades, knowing that he was always in love with another. In the final episode of season four the pair came together, uniting a couple that were never united in the books and setting the television show on a brand new path.

In many Greek stories, it is the duty of humans to listen to the gods. Here, Jocasta is actively going against her religion and the word of the gods by trying to prevent a prophecy from happening. The act of abandoning her infant to die also shows her devotion to Laius, which supersedes her devotion to the gods.
Laius' sin results in a curse upon his house, extending through Oedipus and his children. Oedipus' patricide brings about a plague upon Thebes, which can be repaired by the discovery and punishment of the murderer. The sin of incest has consequences visited upon Oedipus and his children.
