RESULTS: There were more males among preterm and early preterm births than among term births in most populations, including IVF births (odds ratio: 1.09–1.24). No male excess was observed for two cohorts of black births, induced preterm births in the general population, and spontaneous onset births after IVF.
Text: WASHINGTON -- Boys are slightly more likely to be born premature than girls, and they tend to fare worse, too, says a new report on the health of the world's newborns. "This is a double whammy for boys," said Dr. Joy Lawn of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, who led the team of researchers.
These three risk factors make you most likely to have preterm labor and give birth early: You've had a premature baby in the past. You're pregnant with multiples (twins, triplets or more). You have problems with your uterus or cervix now or you've had them in the past.
Mothers who are 17 or younger or 35 or older are more likely to have a premature baby. Teen moms are more likely to get high blood pressure during pregnancy and less likely to get the health care they need. Older women are more likely to have health problems before they get pregnant.
At birth the typical boy is growing slightly faster than the typical girl, but the velocities become equal at about seven months, and then the girl grows faster until four years.
Dr Chilton adds that baby boys need more emotional support from their mother, and for a longer period than baby girls. “Male babies on average have greater difficulty self-regulating their emotional state and therefore have a greater reliance on emotional support, especially from their mother1,” he says.
Results: By the fourth month of pregnancy, mothers reported that males were significantly more active in the womb than females. Also, fetal activity was positively correlated with hyperactivity following birth, especially for males.
Boys and girls arrive at roughly the same time.
They found that the most fertile months for conceiving a boy were from September to November, while the lowest fertile period was from March to May.
Babies that come early or before 37 weeks are more likely to be first babies. According to the data recorded in the National Survey of Family Growth, around 12% of first babies are premature, compared with 10% of other babies.
Some risk factors for preterm birth include delivering a premature baby in the past, being pregnant with multiples, tobacco use and substance abuse, and short time (less than 18 months) between pregnancies. Additionally, pregnancy complications can result in preterm birth because the baby has to be delivered early.
Problems with the uterus, cervix or placenta. Smoking cigarettes or using illicit drugs. Some infections, particularly of the amniotic fluid and lower genital tract. Some chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Most babies (91%) in Australia are born at term (37–41 weeks).
