When a cat is ear-tipped, the veterinarian removes about a quarter of an inch of the tip of an ear (left ear for male cats, right ear for females) in a straight line cut. This is done while the cat is still under anesthesia from the spay/neuter surgery. Ear-tipping is safe, easy to spot, and quick to heal.

Will a neutered cat still try to mate? In some instances, yes, a neutered cat will still retain sexual urges and try to mate. If a male cat is neutered later in life, he'll still have testosterone in his system that can induce sexual activity. It may take weeks or several months for the testosterone to leave the body.
The only behaviors affected by castration are those under the influence of male hormones (these are called sexually dimorphic behaviors). A cat's temperament, training, and personality are the result of genetics and upbringing, and are generally unaffected by the presence or absence of male hormones.
EAR TATTOOS
By Law all Cats and Dogs Desexed in Queensland from 1 July 2009 must be tattooed to indicate they are desexed (Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) ACT 2008). This symbol placed inside the left ear allows simple and rapid identification of desexed animals.
A standard tattoo symbol indicating desexed status should be applied to the left ear of all cats and dogs at the time of surgery.
Veterinarians have traditionally been taught to hold a prone cat's scruff in order to control them for examinations and procedures. The theory was that since kittens go limp when their mothers carry them by the scruff, a tight grip on the loose skin over a cat's shoulders would trigger the same response.
Simple dominance will be exhibited by a cat by marking or spraying urine on territory, stealing and hoarding toys, rubbing its face on items it wants to claim as its own, claiming specific areas to sleep, pushing other cats away from the food bowl, and/or starting at or physically intimidating other cats.
Cats big and little have been observed engaging in homosexual behaviors, although in some cases they may not be actual sexual behavior and instead are just affectionate behavior between friendly animals.
