No single ethnic group has the highest rate for all birth defects, as different groups have higher risks for specific conditions, with American Indians/Alaska Natives showing high overall rates, Hispanics having elevated risks for neural tube defects (like spina bifida) and Down syndrome, and Asians/Blacks sometimes showing higher risks for specific cardiac/craniofacial issues, while whites often have higher rates for conditions like cleft lip/palate, showing complex ethnic variations.

Prevalence of Down Syndrome by Race
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the March of Dimes show that Down syndrome is most common in Hispanic infants, followed by white infants. Black infants have the lowest prevalence of Down syndrome.
Of the people with Down syndrome in the United States: 67% are non-Hispanic and White, 13% non-Hispanic and Black, 16% Hispanic, 3% Asian or Pacific Islander, and 1% American Indian or American Native.
Although women older than 35 years of age make up a small portion of all births6 in the United States each year, about one half of babies with Down syndrome are born to women in this age group. This likelihood increases as age increases.
Discussion. In our study, black women had a significantly higher odds of ever having experienced infertility than white women. Even after adjustment for socioeconomic position, marital status, and other risk factors for infertility, this disparity persisted.
Hispanics have the youngest, 27.6. Non-Hispanic blacks (32.9) and non-Hispanic Asians (35.9) also are younger than whites. Related to their younger age profiles, racial and ethnic minority groups also include a higher share of women in the prime child-bearing ages of 20-34.
In the United States, the highest fertility rates (per 1,000 women ages 15-44) during 2021-2023 (average) were to Hispanic women (64.4), followed by Blacks (55.2), Whites (52.5), American Indian/Alaska Natives (49.3) and Asian/Pacific Islanders (48.1).
Whites are usually taken as the standard against which other groups are compared, but they are not necessarily in the best health. Hispanics appear to be healthier than whites on a number of measures, though not all. Asians are generally in better health than any other group (Hummer et al., 2004).
American Indians in Western and Midwestern states have the shortest life expectancy as of 2021, 63.6 years.
