Three common products containing palm oil are packaged baked goods (like cookies, cakes, and bread), instant noodles, and many personal care items (like shampoo, soap, and toothpaste), used for texture, preservation, foaming, and cost-effectiveness in foods, cosmetics, and cleaning supplies. It's also found in chocolate, peanut butter, margarine, and even pet food, often listed as derivatives like glycerine or sodium lauryl sulfate.
Palm oil is in nearly everything – it's in close to 50% of the packaged products we find in supermarkets, everything from pizza, doughnuts and chocolate, to deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and lipstick. It's also used in animal feed and as a biofuel in many parts of the world (not in the UK though!).
What common products contain palm oil? Apart from the majority of soaps, cleaners and shampoos on the market containing palm oil, many people are shocked to learn that Arnott's Tim Tams also contain palm oil. In fact, palm oil is so widely used in consumer products that it is increasingly difficult to avoid.
Palm oil is also used widely in personal care, cosmetic and household products including soap, toothpaste, shampoo, cosmetics, laundry powders and detergents. And it is used as a raw material for biofuels.
McDonald's leads in palm oil use but not in commitments
Despite signing on to the non-binding New York Declaration on Forests in September reiterating the global importance of forests, McDonald's palm oil policies do not protect forests.
Palm oil is currently used in our fryers in a small proportion. However, it is exclusively certified palm oil (RSPO - Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil).
Kentucky Fried Chicken had the latter in mind when selecting which vegetable oil it would fry its famous chicken in. As of 2007, KFC uses low-linolenic soybean oil for all of its frying needs. Different from typical hydrogenated soybean oil, the low-linolenic variety has less linolenic acid.
Many of the best known chocolate bars and boxes contain palm oil – from Galaxy Caramel and Lindt to Nutella and Ferrero Rocher. In fact, the biggest chocolate bar and box brands all use palm oil, including Mars, Nestle, and Mondelez (owner of Cadbury's).
From farm to finger, Australia's Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants, switched in 2012 from imported sustainable palm oil to 100 per cent Australian-grown high oleic canola oil, to cook their legendary 'finger licking' golden fried chicken and chips.
To avoid palm oil, choose products that contain clearly labeled oils, such as 100 percent sunflower oil, corn oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or canola oil.
Ingredients. Nutella is often advertised along with milk and hazelnuts, although these ingredients constitute a small fraction of the recipe. The main ingredients of Nutella are sugar and palm oil (greater than 50%).

Criticisms and controversies
In March 2010, Kit Kat was targeted for a boycott by Greenpeace for using palm oil, which the environmental organisation claimed resulted in destruction of forest habitats for orangutans in Indonesia.
With a high smoke point and neutral flavor, canola oil is excellent for frying chicken.
Think vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil. Don't use olive oil or butter—they both have lower smoke points. The ideal temperature for frying chicken is 350˚ to 365˚, and you'll want to make sure that you bring the oil back to temperature between batches.
