CHIMPANZEES. RECKONED to be the most-intelligent animals on the planet, chimps can manipulate the environment and their surroundings to help themselves and their community. They can work out how to use things as tools to get things done faster, and they have outsmarted people many a time.
Unsurprisingly, chimpanzees are one of the most intelligent animals on this planet—next to humans, of course.
#3: Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees are very smart animals and are able to solve many different problems posed to them by human trainers and experimenters. Our closest genetic relative comes in third place on this list of the most intelligent animals.
Chimpanzees. As our closest living relatives, chimpanzees have unsurprisingly shown themselves to be exceptionally intelligent. They also have impressive short-term memories – better than our own. Chimps can remember the location of numbers flashed before them for a fraction of a second.
Cats have a 200 times stronger memory than dogs and can recall the details of a day for up to 16 hours. Although dogs may be better at helping people, cats have much more sophisticated brains. Dogs only have 160 neurons in their brains compared to cats' 300 neurons, making them one of the smartest animals in the World.
Some researchers say pigs are even smarter than 3-year-old human children! Pet pigs can learn lots of circus tricks. They can learn how to find food using a mirror and even how to play video games using a joystick! Check out this video of a pet pig performing tricks!
The great apes are considered to be the smartest creatures after humans. Among them, orangutans stand out as being especially gifted with brain.
A study from the University of Sydney and the University of Roehampton in London suggests that kangaroos are capable of intentionally communicating with humans, suggesting a higher level of cognitive function than previously thought.
Elephants
Humans have been domesticating and training elephants for the last four thousand years. Their intelligence, coupled with their strength, has been put to use in construction, war, and under the big top as entertainment.
The capybara, considered the friendliest wild animal, has a calm and compassionate nature, even adopting stray and runt animals, and even providing transportation on its back for birds and monkeys. Considered worldwide as the best pets, canines were one of the first species domesticated by homo sapiens.
In a follow-up experiment using a similar conceptual puzzle, lions outperformed leopards and tigers (which are both solitary big cats)—more evidence for the social intelligence hypothesis.
Very few studies have previously been done on the intelligence of British carnivores, but foxes are known to have larger brains than badgers. If the findings of Dr Morton's studies in America are replicated in the UK, he expects foxes to be the better problem-solvers of the two.
The fox is a cunning animal.
According to the Independent, honey badgers have been described in the Guinness Book of Records as the "most fearless animal in the world" and can even fight off much larger predators like lions and hyenas. An extraordinary video that is going viral online shows a pair of honey badgers doing just that.
The new research shows that dolphins have the longest memory yet known in any species other than people. Elephants and chimpanzees are thought to have similar abilities, but they haven't yet been tested, said study author Jason Bruck, an animal behaviorist at the University of Chicago.
Cows are so much smarter than we give them credit for. They are excellent problem solvers, they remember faces (so make sure you're nice when you meet one!) and they get excited when they find solutions to intellectual problems, just like humans!
Pigs are widely considered to be more intelligent than dogs and equally as intelligent as chimpanzees. They share the ability to perform a number of cognitive tasks with other highly intelligent animals such as dolphins and elephants.
Humans have the highest EQ at 7.4, but bottlenose dolphins have EQs of 5.3, significantly higher than all other animals.
Even the dog owners out there, you betrayed your best friend? Well yes, chimps have way more brainpower than dogs. They can use sign language, drive cars and perform complex tasks.
In fact, on some tests of logic, wolves come out on top. In some experiments conducted in 2009, dogs followed human cues to perform certain tasks—despite evidence that they could see that suggested a different strategy would be smarter. In contrast, wolves made the more logical choice based on their observations.
Results showed that the dogs, having larger brains to begin with, had more than twice as many neurons in their cerebral cortex as the domestic cat, with around 530 million cortical neurons to the cat's 250 million. (For comparison, there are billions of neurons in the human brain.)
